Trisha Meili was found in Central Park serverly beaten and raped multiple times. It was so bad that when she woke up from her two week coma, she didn't remember the attack at all. Two of the 5 (Richardson and Santana) were already in the police station the day before for "unlawful assembly" on the 19th. The other 3 (Korey, Salaam, McCray) were brought in for questioning and after they found out about Meili, all 5 were arrested after connections were made.

All 5 of the boys were convicted of the murder after falsely admitting to the crime, despite DNA not matching any of them and inconsistency in their stories. Salaam later said that they were deprived of food, water, and sleep for over 24 hours by the police. He also said that they were beating them, which led to them falsely admitting. They spent 6-13 years behind bars.
