In 1850 a law was passed that runaway slaves would be turned back to their slave masters if found. Because of the norths belief against the idea of slavery, many didn't follow this law. North abolitionists fought against the idea of returning runaway slaves to their masters. Because of this, it angered South politicians and slave owners, causing more tension between the North and South.

John Brown's raid contributed to the South's Secession by giving the South the opportunity to promote the idea of leaving the union. Southerners used his raid as a way to show the North as brutal people willing to try and take their traditions away from them. His trial and death also had an effect on the North abolitionist who wanted to end slavery as well. This made the South feel uneasy and worried that too many people would stand up against slavery.

The Dred Scott decision contributed to the conflict between the North and the South because it removed the Missouri compromise. This made North abolitionists angry, making them break the laws to try and end slavery which then made the South even angrier. Because the North was refusing to follow the rules this continued to make the South want to remove themselves from the union.
