Although she was born blind, she learned how to use her abilities in earth bending by interacting with nature and animals, not through formal instruction. She wasn't allowed agency over her own life, and her parents kept her a secret from the rest of the world. Due to her circumstances, Toph finds the courage to runs away from home and becomes a teacher to the Avatar. As we follow her journey through self-reliance, as she gets old, she decides to leave society and live in the jungle with nature, peacefully--a master of her element.

She reflects many values of self-reliance such as being a non-conformist to traditional women's societal roles ("The virtue in most request is conformity. Self-reliance is
its aversion. It loves not realities and creators, but names and customs.".), being rebellious, and being iron-willed ("Trust thyself: every heart vibrates to that iron string. Accept the place the divine Providence has found
