REFLECT ON IF YOU MET YOUR PERSONAL TARGETS: (Tuesday 18th September 2018)

DO: What was your focus of work? Why was this important
today the focus of my work revolved around who would benefit? What problems did you have to solve? Today I watched mark Kermode and his 'Secrets Of Cinema.
Mark Kermode turns to horror and shows how film-makers have devilishly deployed a range of cinematic tricks to exploit our deepest, darkest and most elemental fears. He explores the recurring elements of horror, including the journey, the jump scare, the scary place, the monster and the chase. He reveals how they have been refined and reinvented in films as diverse as the silent classic The Phantom of the Opera, low-budget cult shockers The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and The Evil Dead.
This helped

I also looked into codes and conventions, which combine sub-genres such as gore, which is when lots of blood and nasty scenes are shown to shock the viewer. This is commonly shown in zombie movies, such as World War z.
Another common Sub-Genre is the Supernatural. this is where Occurrences happen, such as ghosts, and this is used for effect to scare viewers in films such as The Woman In Black.

SHOW: Include images, screengrabs, recordings of your contribution to project and impact.

REVIEW: Compare what you did with what would be done in industry, how do you need to improve? Give specific examples from industry practice.

What do you need to focus on to improve next week and the rest of the project.

Next week I will need to focus on how to create items such as masking, editing on Pro and my Organisation.

Items and effects which are shown in Mark Kermodes 'Secrets Of Cinema' Helped to benefit my research.

REFLECT ON IF YOU MET YOUR PERSONAL TARGETS: (Friday 14th September)
today I decided to look at makeup, such as creating bruises, cuts such as slit wrists, and ageing. I met my target, having only just restarting the course, to make a more effective and better actor background. I also looked at prosthetics, and how it works in harmony with makeup to make the best effects for an audience.
KNOW: What did you need to know this week? I need to know this week what needs to be done, as I need to start doing extensive research into the horror module, how horror works, and also how horror engages an audience.

DO: What was your focus of work? Why was this important/ who would benefit? What problems did you have to solve? the focus of my work as to make the most effective products possible. I learnt that doing makeup and effects for a production takes time, so I would make sure to give enough time for makeup to be done to an effective standard. this was shown by an industry professional, Charlotte Ghana.

SHOW:

REVIEW: Compare what you did with what would be done in industry, how do you need to improve? Give specific examples from industry practice. overall I attempted to create an effective final product that could be used for acting, and also to make a product that is effective to the viewers as well.

What do you need to focus on to improve next week and the rest of the project. to improve on todays lesson, I will need to improve my overall use with prothestetics. this helps me to create effects such as a wrist slit. I will have to improve and hone on these skills and will do for the rest of this project.

Today I reviewed the industry practice used to engage an audience in a case study using 'Ghost Stories' and looked at the methods used to bring tension and fear to the viewers.

The narrative in story 2 is varied, with high and low vocal tones. The protagonist in story 2 has to walk through a dark house to meet the character and this adds to tension at the beginning of the scene. The lighting in the scene is varied, but most of this story within the film is set in darkness, with the exception of a few lights. lighting is used, such as cutting out or flickering, to add effect. The protagonist is played out in a way that makes overall the start of the scene seem like a normal situation. Just a young adult driving home. Then the action occurs, throwing the viewer off course with what is happening within the scene. This can cause adrenaline within the viewers and fear with the protagonists.

I found out during this class, after watching 'Ghost Stories' that there is a large combination of effects brought together, such as audio, lighting, camera effects such as extreme close ups and long range shots to create a effective scene that is engaging to viewers and keeps them on the edge of their seat. I overall had a benefit of watching this film/ video as it shows me how these effects come together. Next week, I will look further into how these effects together create effect, and how I will apply these effects to my work through a wide range of equipment to make the most effective piece of work possible.

DO: What was your focus of work? Why was this important?

Today I had a workshop for audio with Leila, we looked into how audio creates an overall more effective product, by enticing the viewers to watch on through creating cliffhangers and tension. this was shown through 'Reservoir dogs' where the music is innocent, but the act that is happening on camera is obviously malicious. we also looked through different scenes to make an effective product.

In industry, music helps to play on the viewers mind, making everything seem distorted. Whilst some films, such as The Woman In Black use intense music for danger, Reservoir Dogs use this to display fake innocence instead. I gained from this lesson that audio plays a large factor in horror movies to create tension, and I will keep these skills learnt from this class when I need it.

Today I had a workshop with Dave, showcasing how foley works within horror films and why it is so important to use foley in horror.
This is important as foley makes up a large part of horror in general and how foley helps to add life into a scene, such as crunching leaves, and other effects , as in 28 Days, where there is a church scene and a bag is flapping in the wind.Doing Foley with Dave today has helped me work on my skills through experimentation. The finished Foley video is on showbie.

In industry, foley is used to
make effects throughout and it shows. Foley may be only a small part of a production, but can make a big difference. an example of this is I Am Legend, where there is screeching noises from the car.

Today I looked into the timetable given for the project by Cunningplan and this helped me tp set up my organisation for deadline and my pitch, which is next Thursday. Cunningplan set out that they want Press Kits from the team and that these will be used for pr. These include a wide variety of different methods, but with posters being the main form to promote. I then looked into the BBFC, what this meant and how this affects what can and cannot be inside a production, such as a Film or Television program.
For my 12A target audience, I have to keep to the guidelines. This shows that, through the BBFC, that only some threat and menace can be used, but also with only occasional gore shown, and not dwelling on detail.
The main focus of making sure I know what the guidelines are is to make sure that I do not exceed the limit for my 12A, causing potentially disastrous consequences.
I will reflect also on the idea for my pitch. I believe it is a good idea and can be successful but it is a lot of effort in such small time.
I will dwell on my decision for my pitch.

Today, after looking further at my pitch, I looked at narrative today and how the narrative helps to make a production more effective, by showing how the scene(s) will play out. planning for the overall short film means a car plan will have to be laid out. me and Dave looked further into my idea. Is the location suitable?
what characters will be inside the short film? (good or bad)
the opening?
problem?
conflict?
resolution?
This is what I was asking myself today and can it be done?
how if so?
I delegated my time and worked on how the characters would look. Michael will be a laid back, 18 year old teenager who is meeting his friends at a party but gets lost.
The monster will be dressed in black, with cuts on (their) arm and legs, and will be wearing a mask as the BBFC does not allow human faces in retrospect. I will play more like 'poltergeist 1982' than other films.

overall today showed me how to evolve my narrative and make my pitch overall more effective.
My film title will be Death Penalty or (Poena Mortis), which will flash up on the protagonists phone twice and will be shown on camera during the production.

The weather was also very rough, so we did not manage to get any outside shooting sorted today. This meant we only could use inside, but after playing with the lighting available, we managed to get some effective shots in.

As the producer in my team I worked on my production schedule and collected team filming equipment to make sure that the production ran smoothly. The impact that this had on the film was that we were able to get more effective shots and imagery than without the equipment, thus boosting the quality of the film. this helped for our promotional materials furthermore as we could show that we was in filming.
I have collected the equipment and travelled around 30 miles on a roundtrip to ensure that the equipment would be there ready for the rest of the team. This meant that when our film is premiered on the 29th we will have something to show to our audience.
I am extremely impressed with our team meetings. We have recorded 7 team meetings in total that discuss what we were doing that day and are labelled all for the correct dates. to improve communication in the team I could put the meetings into text, so the team knows what outstanding work there is for the day or even the week. I could also gather their contact numbers and create a group so that the team can call and communicate via text.
I contributed overall to solving problems by helping the director get another actor for the production. I helped to gather the equipment, as the cameraman was at work and he could not get the equipment and get to location on time. I put a contingency plan into place so that the team had a backup if someone called off sick or there was inclement weather to location.

As of now we have not gathered any peer feedback on filming. However next week my focus is to make sure that the production schedule includes this so I can get relevant feedback and make sure that the video and audio is up to scratch for cinema viewing.

Filming Today 1-5
Today we went out filming on location again. It was cold but we managed to get outside shots today. we started filming close ups, Mid shots and moving shots in the first scenes to get an idea of how the imagery will look, and how we could modify the footage to give maximum effect to the audience. The footage we gained collaborating with the new actor was great. We managed to get a lot of initial and establishing shots today. This week has shown me that a lot can go wrong within a production. It is another thing altogether to get it all set right. This week showed me that these downfalls can be very costly in time and resources for a production and I will carry these skills on next week.

What information we gathered for the team meeting was that there was still outstanding paperwork. I sorted out a fresh risk assessment and made sure to sort a production schedule. We also looked into props and how we could acquire these props for Friday. we also looked today at sorting out costumes for the production. We also looked at doing practice shots, but we ran out of time. Today overall helped to give a practical overview of what needs to be done in order for the production to continue for a team pitch.

Today showed me that I needed to be more supportive to my team. How did the imagery look in the production? how could it be improved? what else could I do to make a more engaging product for my audience? what I gained today through looking into footage with the cameraman is that we need a reshoot of our scenes. we have discussed as a team how the lighting in the house, coupled with blurry camera shots has created an ineffective video, with it looking too soft. furthermore, we will be going to reshoot at location tomorrow.
I emailed cunning-plan today with our team poster to get the ball rolling. This PR will become crucial over the next coming weeks as the production comes to completion.

Today during lesson I worked on my production schedule. This is an integral part of my position as a producer and must not be forgotten . looking further into the document has made me realise as a producer that I am now extremely strapped for time, as my cameraman had little direction from myself and this now will impact the production. I will try my best, using this document to the best of my ability, to delegate the time correctly and make sure my production still stays in good quality for next week. comparing this schedule to a industry standard mine lacks key points, such as shot times, and scene direction. this means in the industry to create the same professional document I would have to make sure to avoid this method as it lack these key details.

Today my team went out production filming (11-2). during today we filmed the initial scenes and small scenes within the production such as the initial scenes around the house and the final bedroom scene, which is where the protagonist meets the antagonist. Today was the beginning of a 2 day struggle which is due to leaving insufficient recording time. This very much aggravated me as the production ended up having to be rushed due to the issue of having little time to film such a large segment of the production. In future productions I will keep tighter towards the production schedule and keep track of progress to make sure that the production does not have to be rushed before the deadline.

Today my team went out filming (11-6) to make sure that all the other scenes that needed to be completed were finished. I noticed that within my team we had little feedback, which directly affected the production, as without gathering sufficient feedback I could not modify or make any changes that could be more appealing towards the target audience. Overall, we did encounter a few issues today regarding the production, which directly affected the production. first we had direct issues with punctuality. Our actress and team members arrived late. this impacted the production directly as it gave us even less time to film. The biggest issue was the camera battery dying. correct procedures were not followed to ensure the camera's battery life and this meant we had to find a replacement. unfortunately the cameraman hadn't even Brough a spare battery! This left us to get another team members camera, which ate into valuable time. As of my time writing this entry, filming is now completed. The last 3 weeks have shown me what can go wrong within a production, and has shown me for future productions, such as bringing a spare battery, making sure you have that backup, making sure your actress knows how to get to the location and is punctual, and getting multiple actors so you have a backup if one calls off the production set.

Today my main focus was on creating artwork and supporting the team in the creation of the production. I achieved this today by creating an effective invitation that meant that I could show this towards Joe at Cunningplan and give this invite to friends and family before the viewing. Beginning I had issues where my work did not save correctly, meaning I could not therefore get an effective product. I managed, using my photoshop skills with the magic wand, using fill to create colour, and editing to fill in any gaps, to create an effective but worthwhile final product. Todays lesson learnt was for me to save all data before logging off, as it would get lost and this would effect my product if it was rushed.

Today in class we suffered a large issue where we could not access the film footage that was needed.
we managed to resolve this later on so we could edit in the afternoon. whilst we were waiting for the hard drive to come on site, I managed to get some audience feedback from fellow peers regarding the production. This meant we could gather some feedback to show to my editor so we could update the video if needed, and make audience-induced changes if needed.

Today in media my group worked on finalising the imagery that will be shown for the final product. the aim for today was to also personally gather some audience feedback. I gained this feedback through survey-monkey. This gave me the opportunity to see what the audience preferred over another in order to see what can be done or not.

today in college we worked on creating a video to show our peers tomorrow. we succeeded in making a final product, but struggled as we overshot the deadline for the video to be uploaded. this was due to technical issues but if we were going to redo today, I would allow more time to get these final edits done.

Today we presented our video with the team. we had a short discussion about our video, and where our inspiration was derived from. The feedback that was shown showed that the beginning dragged on too long. this meant that the audience would get bored of the horror film and would not be scared by the ending. To improve the video from the feedback, the video will be cut to make the product as professional and effective as possible. Another niggle with the product was that the brightness was too dark, which is ironic due to it being too bright initially. To sort this issue the brightness will be raised. The presentation today helped to give this valuable feedback. Today I helped to pitch but I lacked my details through my personal speech in the group pitch. I should've spoken more about my role. if I had written a script I could have followed this within the pitch and spoken more about the overall product. Going into next term, I will be stronger within the next production, and make sure that next term I am more proactive within the team.
Finally I helped to send up some more promotional material within the college, which meant that more people could be interested and vote for my production
