I found it quite simple to be able to compare and contrast the two social media tools. Pocket has its downfalls concerning its abilities to effectively manage articles that have been saved whereas Pinterest excels in such a thing. At first, I was a little bit worried about this assessment as I was not familiar with such social mediatools, specifically padlet and pocket. Pinterest and YouTube are apps I use frequently, when I saw these two, I was felt much more at ease. This e-portfolio was based on the use of social media tools to support our online engagement as a digital citizen by finding, curating, sharing, creating and publishing and managing information in an effective matter. Hintz and Dencik (2017) defines digital citizenship ‘as the self-enactment of people’s role in society through the use of digital technologies.’ I began with setting up a padlet account and started with the basics with the help of the YouTube videos which were thankfully linked for us in the assessmentsection on Brightspace. This is where I could document my progress and given activities for this assessment. ‘Padlet is a virtual wall where you can share your ideas in a variety of formats including text, images and videos’, (Maxwell, 2019). Padlet is an excellent tool which has its benefits in regard to engaging with becoming a better digital citizen as it allows you to manage and share information coherently. After setting up my padlet and becoming more comfortable with it, I proceeded with social bookmarking using both Pinterest and Pocket. I was intrigued to find out what Pocket was used for as I had no previous history with this tool. Pocket is a free service that allows you to engage, save and share articles on topics you are interested in. I added plenty of riveting articles to my list which made them accessible for future use. Pinterest is an app I use frequently so I knew exactly how to create and curate different boards and had no issues in doing so. Using these tools allowed me to share and develop my creative skills using digital technology. Engaging with unfamiliar and familiar digital technologies determine our level of digital literacy which Fulton and McGuinness (2016) discuss. Paul Gilster (1997) defines digital literacy as ‘the ability to understand and use information in multiple formats from a wide range of sources when it is presented via computers’. Furthering on from these two social media tools, we were asked to create a map mashup using both excel spreadsheets and google maps which we could then share to others. The use of excel is always a daunting idea for me as I often find it quite difficult, there were useful pdfs linked for us to follow which made it seem less intimidating although I did run into some slight difficulties when creating my map mashup which were easily overcome! Creating a map using a variety of different tools was certainly an engaging activity in regards to becoming a better citizen as it allowed me to figure out new things about myself concerning how I learn and how I tackle new tasks using social media tools. Gleason and Von Gillern (2018) discusses how social media can support the development of digital citizenship, this is a discussion I can agree with after engaging with this part of the assessment!The last part of this e-portfolio was the creation of a 30 second video on YouTube using Screen-O-Matic. This section of the assignment was certainly the section I was most worried yet intrigued about as I had no prior knowledge on how to use such software needed to complete this. After several blank thoughts on what I would make the video on I decided to do a how to make brownies video and began with watching and thoroughly assessing the applicable video instructions in the materials to help your learning section. Although I was nervous about this part of my assessment, it allowed me to explore new ways of finding information and understand that using tools unfamiliar to me can be exceedingly advantageous in future use. The participation of new tasks allows one to become a more engaged digital citizen. As described by Pangrazio & Sefton-Green (2021), digital citizenship “is not just about civic responsibilities or self-responsibilization, but rather how the digital facilitates new forms of participation”.In conclusion, creating this e-portfolio has given me the opportunity in becoming a greater and more knowledgeable digital citizen through the use of social media tools. I developed a great amount of new and useful skills using digital technology and social media tools I had not previously used such as the ability to create a screencast, adding to my engagement in becoming a better digital citizen. I also gained a more in depth understanding of what digital citizenship involves, including the practice of social participation in a respectful matter which The Council of Europe (2022) discusses. I am now much more confident when curating, sharing and creating new information. I engaged critically and competently with the given tasks and am thoroughly looking froward to expressing and using my new skills in future assignments and future use of digital technology. The feedback I received from peerscholar was extremely helpful in completing my reflection, thanks to this I discussed more about new skills and reviewed more sources.
