Look for a famous painting to describe (2 minutes of speaking time), upload it on the wall. For the title write who it was chosen by (PS! Make sure you don't pick the same paintig with someone else!). In addition, look up 5 - 6 sentences about the author of the painting and add them to your post. PS! While you practice your decriptions, time yourself! You think you speak for 2 minutes, but often you are done in about 1 minute. Don't forget to use the most common phrases of picture describing given in the book (page 30). If you have long pauses, hesitation or elongated speech - it will not help you in getting a better mark. Speaking for 2 minutes is just as important as a fluent and well-organised speech.

His personality was as odd as his paintings - he was a showman and liked extreme measures to become memorable to others. Once he gave a full lecture wearing a deep-sea diving suit!

Vincent Willem van Gogh was a Dutch Post-Impressionist painter who is among the most famous and influential figures in the history of Western art. In just over a decade he created about 2,100 artworks, including around 860 oil paintings, most of them in the last two years of his life. They include landscapes, still lifes, portraits and self-portraits, and are characterised by bold colours and dramatic, impulsive and expressive brushwork that contributed to the foundations of modern art. Van Gogh was unsuccessful during his lifetime. He was considered a madman and a failure. He became famous after his suicide, and exists in the public imagination as the quintessential misunderstood genius, the artist "where discourses on madness and creativity converge".

Sandro Botticelli,1484-1486
Botticelli’s The Birth of Venus was the first full-length, non-religious nude since antiquity, and was made for Lorenzo de Medici. It’s claimed that the figure of the Goddess of Love is modeled after one Simonetta Cattaneo Vespucci, whose favors were allegedly shared by Lorenzo and his younger brother, Giuliano. Venus is seen being blown ashore on a giant clamshell by the wind gods Zephyrus and Aura as the personification of spring awaits on land with a cloak. Unsurprisingly, Venus attracted the ire of Savonarola, the Dominican monk who led a fundamentalist crackdown on the secular tastes of the Florentines. His campaign included the infamous “Bonfire of the Vanities” of 1497, in which “profane” objects—cosmetics, artworks, books—were burned on a pyre. The Birth of Venus was itself scheduled for incineration, but somehow escaped destruction. Botticelli, though, was so freaked out by the incident that he gave up painting for a while.
