Reflective Journey of the First Day of the PDC

We had a full day with exciting activities! First, we warmed up as a team, then tackled Action Bound tasks that kept us active. Group reflections came next, which were really insightful. We saw some videos and each team told the others about them, a neat way to share knowledge. We got imaginative about how to show PDCs using metaphors and enjoyed role-playing as PDC experts and reporters. It was a fun day of discovery and collaboration, truly proving the value of creativity and teamwork.

Todays PDC session, the emphasis was on enhancing the teaching of listening skills. Topics included effective instructions, addressing challenges in listening tasks such as understanding varied accents or fast speech, and developing diverse activities for different stages of listening. Additionally, tailored tasks for diverse learners were brainstormed, and course materials were adjusted accordingly. These initiatives are geared towards improving teaching methodologies and fostering inclusivity and success in listening activities for students.

In today's session, we explored the use of technology in teaching. We started with an exciting game called Parasite that got everyone involved and set a lively mood. Then, we discussed the different stages of speaking activities: pre, while, and post. We also introduced two new apps, Flip and Paper Slide, which can be valuable tools for teaching with technology. Throughout the session, we emphasized the importance of designing speaking tasks that cater to the diverse needs of students, promoting inclusivity.

However, it is important to understand that Flip, despite being a versatile educational tool, does come with some potential risks. One such risk is the possibility of students encountering bullying. Therefore, it is imperative for educators to actively monitor and address any inappropriate behavior in order to create and maintain a safe and positive learning environment. The session concluded by exploring four more apps: Animoto, Clarisketch, Chatterpix, and Voki, each offering distinct features like multimedia tools and interactive whiteboards.

Overall, the session equipped me with readiness to integrate these insights and tools into my teaching approach.

We explored pre, while, and post-reading exercises and the significance of Professional Development Communities. The session expanded my understanding of differentiation activities and introduced fresh ideas from peers to adapt reading contexts effectively.

Today's professional development session focused on teaching grammar and vocabulary. We discussed explicit and implicit grammar teaching, emphasizing the need to blend these approaches for a well-rounded language learning experience. For vocabulary, we explored effective methods like visuals, flashcards, and Concept Checking Questions (CCQs) to aid comprehension and critical thinking. Integrating technology, such as jeopardylabs, was highlighted for vocabulary teaching. However, considering Turkish education standards aiming for A2+ or B1 levels upon graduation, we discussed the importance of adapting our classes accordingly.
