It needed to be improved because the first compass had 8 directions but now the compass is divided into 32 points and call it the compass rose

The compass is a magnetic tool that is man made. The navigator using the needle on the compass would rub an iron needle against the loadstone, then stick it in a piece of straw and it would float in a bowl of water the needle would point to the direction North.
