1.Poverty is when someone or a group of people live in a place that is nearly unliveable/when you make and have nearly no money, and nearly no resources.

2.This theme (poverty) is explored in the novel by the characters living on the dumpsite in small things that are not proper houses, without clean running water, and without toilets, like many other people in the city. The lack of toilets is implied by the stupp (poo) wrapped in paper found in the dumpsite. The fact that characters live in holes and can only get food from the money they make by selling valuable plastics and other materials they find.

3. Poverty affects certain characters in the novel such as Raphael, Gardo and Rat. It affects them because of their lack of water and unstable food supply. They lack money and resources and part of the plot of the story is that Rat is trying to gain more money to escape the continuous cycle of poverty and create a better life for himself.

4. "They're poor, they do many things"
"He's thin as a whip"
“It might seem crazy asking a kid if you can come into his hole, but this hole was about the only thing that Rat had, apart from what he wore.”

1. Corruption is when the people who are in power deceive or are unjust to the people and they often bribe people. Often it is to have control over a population or to benefit themselves.

2. The theme is explored by how Gabriel Olondriz (the lawyer) was unjustly put into jail when he tried to expose the senator. The senator managed to squeeze out of the situation with money and somehow flipped the blame on Gabriel.

3. Corruption affects a lot of the characters throughout the novel. It mainly impacts those who aren't rich or living on the dumpsite. Some people take advantage of the corruption, the police take advantage of being able to cover up any bad things via help from the corrupted government.

4. "Senator Zapanta stores millions of dollars of cash in his house."
"He took the seed corn money for himself and didn't use it to build schools and hospitals."
