What are the traits, coping methods, values, work views, immigration stories, and occupational history of parents and grandparents?

My family typically uses religion to cope with things. We ask God for forgiveness and look to God to lead us in the right direction when dealing with something. My family values our family and the connection we share. Family is the most critical aspect of our lives. We also value respect and hard work. It is an essential part of being a good person. My parents immigrated from Colombian when I was a year old. They came to the U.S. in search of a better life. They came here with no money and didn't understand the language. They built their way up to give me a home and an education. My mother and grandmother were both school teachers. My father does construction and my grandfather was an engineer back in Colombia.

Is there intergenerational trauma?

Not that I'm aware of.

What are the coping mechanisms of the previous generation?

To look to God for support. There isn't as much of a focus on emotion in my family. We are pushed to rely on God.

MBTI

MBTI Personality Type: INTJ

What techniques did you use to help the client construct the narrative?

I would first discuss the test and theory for using the test with clients. I would then ask the client about their behaviors, thoughts, and feelings. Through active listening and reflection, I would help the client construct a narrative to help provide them with self-awareness of their different traits. I would also take a deep dive into their own personal experiences and life stories so that we can further understand the client.

What strategies would you take to administer and process the MBTI with this client?

To administer the test, I would first talk with the client to give them a detailed description of the test and the different misconceptions of the MBTI. Based on their comfortability, I would then provide them with the test via paper or online, go over the results, and take a deep dive into understanding their results and how they relate to their own life and experiences.

How would you facilitate a discussion about the client's MBTI score with the client?

To facilitate a discussion about the client's score, I would break down each portion of the test and discuss the results with them. We would then explore how accurate the test was in identifying the client's traits and evaluate how we can use this information in a career search for personal development and self-awareness. We would also look into the career paths that suit these personality types to see if they could fit the client.

What challenges might you find, and how would you navigate them?

Clients may misinterpret their results or place too much importance on their MBTI type. This could cause them to limit themselves in their job search and think they will only succeed in jobs suited to their personality type. They may also believe they are limited to the traits described within their personality type. To navigate these challenges, I emphasize that the MBTI is to be used as a tool for personal development and self-awareness and that it is not 100% accurate. It should only be used as a framework for understanding themselves and not as a permanent reflection of who they are.

Highlight one part of the process you consider to be important:

I would highlight the extrovert and introvert portions of the process as the client struggles with these personality types when she experiences social anxiety. By reviewing the traits of an introvert, I can point out the positive aspects of this and show the client how they can utilize their strengths as introverts in their own lives and careers personality type.

Would the MBTI work with your client? Why or why not?

I think the MBTI could help my client come out of her shell and gain more confidence as an introvert. By highlighting her strengths, the client may feel more inclined to interview for different jobs and be more motivated for her future, knowing that she can utilize these skills.

What barriers, issues, or concerns might arise when using the MBTI with your client? Address multicultural and social justice issues.

Interpretation: Clients may not fully understand the questions in the test and may find it challenging to identify their preferences.

Cultural relevance: the test doesn't consider cultural context and is more focused on Western backgrounds, which can affect how the client answers the question and how accurate their results are.

Systematic Barriers: Due to sexism and racism, the client may experience extended barriers in her career search as people of color and women often don't have the same opportunities to succeed in their careers as more privileged individuals.
