I know this because the beaks of the finch got longer and thicker in 1978 by about 1mm. I also know this because the portulaca seeds went from an average of about 9 seeds per meter by month in 1975 and 1976 to almost 0 seeds per meter by month in 1977. Finally, I know this because the rainfall on Daphne Major decreased by 110mm in 1977 due to a drought. This is natural selection because the Finch's beaks changed in thickness and in length by about 1mm by eating different foods that they didn't have before. Natural selection is when animals are better suited to the environment. This means only birds with the better characteristics survived because they were better suited to the environment to get their food. This also shows its natural selection because the shortage of portulaca seeds means the birds who had longer beaks survived. This is true because they were able to get the seeds they needed. They had to eat the Tribulus seeds which were harder for the small beaked birds to eat. Finally, I know this is natural selection because the decrease in rainfall caused the birds who are better suited to the environment to survive better than the birds who aren't from the lack of water. The birds with longer beaks can get water from the seeds better than the birds with short beaks. I know this because the seeds are where they get most of their water from, causing the short-beaked birds to have less food and water.
