I dont support what the US government did to end the war.
War in general is a horrible thing, and in an atomic war nobody wins. Although, using the atomic bomb on hiroshima not knowing the effect on human society is a war crime. The extent of damage did to humanbeings is unbelieveable and is wrong. People suffered beyond belief even though they did nothing wrong. The US should have used other stratergy to end the war. Because of this bomb back in 1945 the world now is more afraid of nuclear warfare (which could end humanity) which could have been avoided if America did not investiage such a weapon of mass destruction. This is why I believe that what the US goverment did to Hiroshima was unjust and uncalled for

even though the atomic bomb and its effects were horrifying, in my opinion, it's 50/50 it was right to use the bomb to end the war as it seems necessary to an extent, plus back then the hate for the Japanese was immense even to its civilians so I understand why they would use the bomb not only once but again after even seeing the devastating effects of it, so in my opinion, it was necessary from a military point of view and a way to end the war but it was very inhuman. it was also a somewhat last resort since they made numerous requests for the surrender of the Japanese due to the Japanese ideology (Bushido) which was a big problem leading them to have no other option but to use their atomic bombs then follow up with the Fat Man bomb to further warn them until Emperor Hirohito finally announced a surrender. So since the casualties were over 100,000 i believe at that time it was necessary however very inhumane

The bombing of Hiroshima was not necessary. It completely changed the world's view on nuclear weapons. In just a second, hundreds of thousands of citizens were wiped out, many more died in the following days from after effects of the bomb. Although it ended the war a lot quicker and may have saved more people from dying. But the decisions of dropping the bomb in Hiroshima was unacceptable. Most of the Japanese citizens have nothing to do with the war, they had normal lives just like any of the people in other countries, the US could have picked better locations such as military bases or empty islands, to use to warn the Japanese government. But instead they chose to bomb the city of Hiroshima, not just to kill the innocent Japanese citizens, but also to experiment the effects of their evil weapon on human beings, as their test in New Mexico was on empty land. This is simply just an evil decision. Even to this day they still believe what they did was righteous.

I believe that dropping the first bomb on Hiroshima was justified as it was intended to make Japan surrender and end the world war, however it was a very destructive and possibly unnecessary way to make an attempt to end the war. After already dropping the first bomb I think that using a second bomb on Nagasaki was warranted because of the way the Japanese people / soldiers think. (bushido warrior code) and that they would not have surrendered to the Americans without experiencing the first hand destruction that could be done by the Americans in a mere 4 days.

The bombing of Hiroshima by the US showed the world what they were capable of and were in the driving seat in terms of warfare and modern weaponry. Although tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands of people were killed, it saved the lives of millions more people from both Japan and America. Although it seems like the US was unjustly targeting civilians, it likely saved millions of civilian deaths from invasion as well as from suicide due to Japanese propaganda, as seen in the island-hopping campaign. The Americans also extensively tried to make the Japanese surrender but despite even softening the surrender terms, it seemed highly unlikely to surrender would be an option. If the bomb was not dropped, a huge loss of life would have occurred if a land invasion had gone ahead as the Japanese soldiers had been taught to fight to the death. The reasons for dropping the atomic bomb far outweigh the bad things that happened at Hiroshima.

The bombing of Hiroshima showed the world what the US' weapons were capable of. It started when Japan failed to declare war on the US before the attacked on Pearl harbor. Then failing to surrender from the war it was a build up of events. From a military perspective it was necessary, although I think that it shouldn't have been taken to this certain extent, bringing so many civilian lives into risk and then leading to death for thousands. I think that Japan needed to have consequences for their actions, but not in a way that would lead so much pain and suffering. Especially having so many people and children die, that were innocent. I know that Japan would not have surrendered if what the US did was not big, they would have just continued on with war and more lives would have possibly been lost continuing on with war.

After learning about the bombing of Hiroshima the last few lessons, i decided that i am against it. The American military could've handled it way better than they did with bombing two cities. During the documentary one of the survivors stated that this was an experiment done by the Americans and they didn't have to do it, which i agree with it. Thousands of civilians and innocent people were brutally murdered and suffered greatly. If they didn't die instantly, they died a slow painful death, had major burns completely burning off their skin, drowned or died from the radiation while losing loved ones around them and their city. I understand that the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbour first, but rather than bombing a naval base of involving soldiers that were involved in the war, they killed thousands of people who just wanted to live their lives. I agree that the Americans were just angry hateful people who could've handled it better than torturing thousands.

I believe that the bombings of Japan were justifiable to a degree. I think that yes, it is justifiable to have some sort of attack on the Japanese but to the extent that America did it too is a bit much. America didn’t have to take it that far in releasing an atomic bomb and killing 100,000+ people. America could have just attacked the military bases in Japan because that is what Japan did to Pearl Harbour, but the Japanese population didn’t deserve what happened especially Nagasaki. The bomb was probably the better option for saving the lives of a lot of Japanese people, because it ended WWII at that moment. It could have been used as a last resort type of action and may not have needed to be used at all.

The United States detonated two nuclear weapons over the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on 6 and 9 August 1945, respectively. The two bombings killed between 129,000 and 226,000 people, most of whom were civilians, I think that the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki was the right thing to do so the war could come to a speedy end and to stop many more soldiers from being killed in war. I think it was a bit much because the radiation was extreme and was not needed they killed way more then they wanted, and most of the fatalities where civilians and not soldiers, so it stopped the war but collapsed 2 major cities.

The U.S. government is in the wrong. They knew that the bomb held radiation and used Hiroshima as an experiment. War shouldn't be used as a game or experimental playground.
Necessary from a military point of view, yes, but the U.S. should of done something smaller or safer to send a message instead of two massive bombs that killed millions of people. They could have agreed to a different solution, but once again now we know what humans are capable of, how nuclear weapons work, what medicine can help or prevent these diseases from radiation etc. Yet I still disagree that the bombing was a good idea, the U.S. focused on themselves and didn't put themselves in the shoes of the Japanese civilians. They should not of dropped another bomb in the span of four days either, they knew the causalities and horror from the first one, so had no right to put Japan through this twice. The deaths that came from this nuclear bomb was horrendous, and the radiation was so damaging even for years later, the U.S. should not have experimented on human beings.

However, the Japanese fierce will to never surrender and their unwavering loyalty to Hirohito meant they were never going to surrender.

In all honesty, I feel very conflicted on this specific question, as it comes down to a battle between perspectives and whether you want to purely base your opinion on ethics or the morals of the war. When nations are faced with the possibility of war, or even experiencing it, the main focus of attention is gathering alliances, identifying the enemy, and most importantly - looking out for your own. When you relate this to the mindset the Americans had, you could justify their actions (especially after Japan advanced on Pearl Harbor). Yes, bombing Hiroshima was a form of retaliation and obtaining power, but it was also the perfect opportunity to put an end to the war, which was already horrific as it was. But on the other hand, the bombing was such an inhumane decision. The psychological, physical, governmental and moral effects that it would have had would be immense, and such a dark period in time for the Japanese.

Although I completely agree with the fact that Japan did not deserve what they received, at the same time, the bombing really shaped the way nuclear weapons were viewed, change in medicinal purposes, etc.

My reasoning is that firstly, there should been a better option for a solution rather than wiping out 2 cities full of unsuspecting people. America could of thought of a better way of dealing with the situation. America had an idea of what would happen and the pain that followed. War is bad anyway, shape or form but America stepped over the line. Even though the bomb being dropped was justified in ways like ending the war and giving warning to the rest of the world, it still wasn't right.

The bombing of Hiroshima by the US government sent a message to the Japanese and the rest of the world that they were in charge and had power, weaponry, and the ability to cause destruction that had never been seen before. It was a necessary move from a military perspective, and a move to end war, from a moral perspective it seems unjust and unnecessary. But one side was going to have to make a drastic move to stop the other, if the US didn’t drop the bomb, and continued to threat the Japanese they would’ve faced risks of land invasion, and potentially more US deaths. The US hadn’t tested the power of nuclear bombs on humans, and yes you could say that if they didn’t drop it then we wouldn’t know the power of nuclear weaponry. But some other country at some point in history would’ve tested it out. The outcome and impact on the innocent Japanese was wrong, and not deserved or justified. It impacted more civilians compared to soldiers; Japan was trying to keep it within the war when they bombed pearl harbor whilst the US bombed a city. In the moment it seemed right, because no one had yet seen the devastating impact. Yet the ultimate outcome of war is power, regardless of what is deemed wrong, one side is always going to fight until the end if they can win.

No. That's the simple answer. No nation is justified for the death of hundreds of thousands of people. No man is justified for suffering of millions for one cause. No one is justified to have the right to argue if what took place was ok. It simply wasn't.
When President Truman confirmed the go ahead to drop a weapon on a city of hundreds of thousands of people, he had already heard of the "success" of trinity. He had already heard of the devastation of one bomb and was prepared to drop another to "end the war". This (in my opinion) is just not true. I believe that Truman had the intentions of hosting a show of power for Russia at Japan's cost.
Now I say this after hearing the conversation between Stalin, Truman and Churchill. Including the way that Stalin reacted to this news showed that he either new about Trinity and America's plans or he had plans of his own. Think about it. Russia declared war on Japan after Hiroshima and Nagasaki were bombed as they probably saw it as the perfect opportunity to not waste their own recourses in a show of strength against America.

All of this was a show of strength. Who was better and squashing the last country in a global war. Who was better at finishing the job quickly and who could do the most damage. None of it had any true reasoning for war. In the eye's of the allies it had already been won. Taking out Japan was a joke to them and they wanted to do the most damage they could to prove to a friend who was better. It was Childs play, and they cost the lives of millions doing something stupid.

None of it was justified...

None of it...

The United States of America bombed the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki within 4 days. Although the bombing of these cities caused mass destruction and death and almost completely destroyed these cities, I think this bombing was mostly justified from the American point of view. The Americans wanted to end the war and the bombing completely achieved this purpose as it caused the Japanese to finally surrender. From a military point of view, you completely understand why the Americans bombed Japanese and it is hard to imagine anything that the Americans could’ve done to cause the Japanese to surrender. The Japanese were very strong in their opinion and could’ve dragged the war on forever until they were victorious, so I believe that the Americans were smart in trying to end the war as soon as possible and this was the best and quickest way to cause the Japanese to surrender. War in general is horrible but there had to be a winner in the war, or the war would’ve been dragged on until one side won. From the civilian point of view, the immediate response is that it was not justified because of all the harm it caused for civilians and completely destroys the Americans idea of the bombing hurt less people, but it really hurt more civilians compared to the more military personnel that would’ve been harmed in a land invasion. The bombing of these two cities really showed the world how powerful America was at the time and how advanced they were in weaponry causing the rest of the world to fear them and help them to become the country they are today. Although killing people is never the answer overall the decision to drop the bomb on Hiroshima was justified in the moment, as they didn’t know the full extent and power of the bomb and knew that it would do something but don’t think they ever predicted how much harm it would cause Japan. Finally, the bombing was an important decision in the 1945 as it helped scare the world and warn them to never go to war again and also helped other people to not use atomic bombs because of the damage it caused. Without this bombing, a lot of other countries could’ve used the bombs and abuse the power of the bomb and cause a lot more damage than the Americans did.

The bombing of Hiroshima for the civilians was absolutely tragic and sufferable. Although in the long run, for everyone was beneficial. Both United States and Japan were incredibly stubborn and would not back down therefore maybe a nuclear bomb was the only way to end the war. Even though a large (unknown amount) were killed, it saved the millions of lives that would have been killed in a land invasion.

Everyone was so tired of the war and just wanted it to end. Therefore the Americans didn’t even think about the loss of lifes. Americans cut innocent life and continued to have repercussions because of the nuclear damage.

Even though, America shouldn't have dropped the bomb, maybe it was justifiable?

I think that although it caused great destruction in Japan, and thousands of people died because of the bomb there was some part that made it justifiable for the US. The bombing of Hiroshima was tragic with thousands of people dying from the initial radiation blast an then more from the fire, drowning and radiation poisoning. The children cries from the innocent children made it horrific. I think that even though this happened, if the US had not dropped the bomb the war would have continued for an even longer time. I think that the first drop was somewhat justifiable but the second one 3 days later in Nagasaki was uncalled for. When the first bomb was dropped the US had no idea what devastation it would cause, and people now think of it as a human experiment. I think an assassination of the Japanese political leaders would have been enough. Personally I think the ideology was army against army and not people against army.

In my opinion the nuclear attack on Japan was a necessary evil to cripple the Japanese war spirit and bring a peace to the world after 6 years of fighting, but the adverse effects after the nuclear bomb was horrific and the mental and physical trauma was appalling.

From a militarist point of view the Atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki where completely acceptable due to the Japanese will to continue the fight as the U.S’s island hopping campaign was ‘small potato’s’ compared to the vast swabs of land they have conquered in China and south east Asia, even if the Allies intended to invade he Japanese mainland their would have been an untold amount of casualties on both sides due to the Japanese’s people undying love for the emperor and Japan, some estimates put the deaths up to 7 million on the Allied side and 10 million on the Japanese side so the atomic bombings would have an insignificant amount of deaths at a 226,000 at the highest estimates.

The aftermath of the atomic bombs where horrific as these bombing kill hundreds of thousands of innocence just in the initial days but an untold number of innocents where kill down the line today as radiation damage from those bombs have now been handed down through to todays children who still have a higher chance of cancer and other radiation effected diseases.
Bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki - Sharntai

The physical bombing of Hiroshima occurred over a span of four days, yet the plan for this technological bomb development occurred over a sum of years. The destruction and disastrous nature of this bomb will never be forgotten and the following repercussions have not gone unnoticed or ignored. The sickness and death that this bomb caused will forever be remembered in history and go down as the very first use of an atomic bomb ever.

Whether the bomb was necessary or whether it seemed overkill is something of which I believe I cannot have an opinion on. I have simply learned about the tip of the iceberg of World War 2, and specifically the events that led to the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings and due to this fact, my opinion of whether the bombs where necessary or not, is hugely subject to change the more that I learn or hear about the events and developments of World War 2. In short, I believe this bomb was necessary, but I disagree with the shear mass of the bomb. An atomic bomb with such size as was used created incredibly terrible consequences that can still be physically witnessed today and sicknesses that killed the many after the fact. The initial killings where to be expected, but the backhanded way of essentially chemical war through radiation sickness and infections that developed from the chemical creation of the split nuclei and the energy created in the atomic bomb was where I believe the bomb went just too far in retaliation. It was a miracle for the survivors of this bomb to survive, but to later take them out with an unbeknownst sickness that hadn't been realized or tested, essentially using a whole city and population of people as a human experiment for this new war threat is what I believe to be inhumane and selfish. Thankfully it was only two cities that this bomb took out, because if half of Japan was bombed, the initial deaths would be justified, but the later, slower, more painful deaths would be incredibly inhumane and I believe enough for the American politicians to be blamed. Realistically though, Hiroshima and Nagasaki where destroyed and the use of these two Atomic bombs is what officially ended the war. A war of which had already caused the death of hundreds of thousands, and a war of which could've caused the death of hundreds of thousands more. With this perspective, I believe the Americans thought process during this time was; 'we either keep fighting this war and lose hundreds of thousands of more lives, or we end this war now, and lose hundreds of thousands of lives - either way is a lose, lose', and for that opinion, I believe the events that occurred were the events that occurred due to the shear knowledge, actions and consequences of which everyone thought they predicted, yet, the consequences that occurred, where out of the realms of any knowledge or thought that anyone could've had at the time.
