WM is 4 years old. He is one of 4 children in his family. He lives with his mom, dad, sister, 2 brothers a dog and a cat. WM enjoys playing with his brothers and sister indoors and out. He is a very active child always running around having fun, but he enjoys picking on his siblings a bit more than his parents like. He enjoys engaging in simple and complex puzzles for extended periods of time. WM also enjoys playing with cars, blocks, drawing, writing and looking at books as his teachers read them.

Evidence of growth using 6 Literacy Skills

Lab number one he was pointing out the letters W and D and relating them to words he already knew. He was using his print recognition skills as well as his print motivation skills. He can also identify that those letters have similar meanings when he shows that D is for both dad and dog.

In lesson plan number 2 he displays language and literacy development skills when he uses shapes, colors and lines to create his representation of a truck for his dad. He also shows literacy development when he uses conversations to talk to his friends while playing. He displays the use of print awareness and print motivation when he asks CE for help writing the letters of his name that he doesn't know how to write like the letter Y.

In Lab 3

He is improving his print motivation as KC and him are in the book area independently looking through the Rainbow Fish book and pointing out interesting animals they see. He is also improving his print awareness as they scan the pages of the book and see the words on each page and try to decipher what each page says in their own terms. They are also improving their narrative skills by describing the animals in the story.

Children who are exposed to advanced vocabulary at a young age who are engaging in conversations learn words they will later need to recognize and understand while reading. Vocalization helps them understand these written words in the books they read and listen to when an adult reads to them. Children also label the objects in books that they understand in real life and connect those to objects they don't know. When children turn the age of four they begin turning those vocabulary words into their own speech. Talking with children is the best exposure they can have because they are seeing it while hearing you read it to them.

WM displays the use of scientific skills of aquatic ecosystems with standard 4.2 PK.C Describe an aquatic (water) and terrestrial (land) habitat by understanding that animals need a habitat to survive just like dinosaurs do. He also understands that ducks live near a pound of a body of water in order for them to survive.
WM also displays standard 9.1.V PK.E Use imagination and creativity to express self through visual arts when he chooses the art center in free play. He also demonstrates this standard when he creates a visual representation of the pound with Play-Doh.
WM uses standard16.2 PK.A Interact with peers and adults in a socially acceptable manner as he plays with a variety of friends around the room and interacts with them. He is also improving his vocabulary as he interacts with each of his friends.

A preschool child age 36-48 months should be able to understand and name four different types of animals. A child at this age should also be able to recognize one or more colors. They should be able to follow simple directions A preschool child should also be able to use imagination for play. They should also be able to use the materials given to create a work of art. They should also understand the alphabetical system and be able to identify printed words. They should be able to use background knowledge and known strategies to understand new concepts. Children at this age also have motivation to learn about the six literacy skills.

Interest and needs

Wm is very interested in learning new letters, numbers, shapes and ways to learn. He is always interacting with everyone in the room on a friendly basis looking for someone to play with. WM is also interested in playing cars, building with blocks, building with magnet tiles, building puzzles, writing, coloring and importantly challenging his mind to learn new things. WM is a very explorative child who enjoys hands-on activities. He enjoys playing indoors and outdoors with friends and sometimes independently. He enjoys sculpting with playdough, painting creations for his mom and dad as well as coloring outside with chalk.

Curriculum goals

My curricular goals for WM are for him to be able to write his entire name independently just like he does his W. I would also like to be able to see him progress to learning to write his last name before entering kindergarten. I will also continue to improve his print awareness by helping his notice those letters in his name as well as the rest of the alphabet. I will also help improve his Print motivation as the children pick books to read each day. I will ensure all children have access to books to look at independently or with a friend throughout the day as well as access to a teacher to read the books to them.

My recommendation for at home is to continue the practice of letter recognition as well as letter formation to continue seeing the progress of his name and knowledge of letters in the alphabet. I also suggest picking books that connect to your life to help spark your child's interest of reading.

Lesson plan Puppet show

The children in this lesson used the languages of literacy and the languages of movement. The children used the language of literacy as I read the book Pete the cat, I love my white shoes by Eric Litwin and James Dean. WM used the literacy skills of vocabulary as heard the words in the story being read aloud. He expressed knowledge of print motivation when he shows his love for when an adult reads him a book. He also enjoys picking up a book to look at the pictures and words to find known letters. He used print awareness as he see's the written text in the book. He also presented narrative skills as he used the puppets to retell the story. He also used languages of movement as they moved their hands with the puppets and talked about the story.

Children represent and express ideas through the languages of movement when they explore physical skills with their bodies, materials, and sounds. They also express themselves as they move to a steady beat.

In this lesson plan WM met the following standards 9.1.M PK.B Respond to different types of music and dance through participation and discussion. WM participated in the music and movement lesson plan to learn how to respond to actions in a song.

Science lesson plan: Seed planting and exploring

The children learned that a plant needs soil, water and sunlight to survive. They also learned that seeds grow with sunlight and water into plants. They learned that there are many types of seeds to plant some of them you can grow food and some grow flowers or grass. The children also learned that seeds take time to grow, and they are something that we must check on every day for the seed to continue to grow. We also talked about the steps of a seed's life cycle and what the plants would like at the different stages of their development.
