"Robots Taking Over in Warehouses" by Hiawatha Bray

Hiawatha Bray's article is about Amazon's use of robots in the warehouse and the general use of robots in warehouses. In this article Bray talks a lot about why using robots in the warehouse is a good thing suggesting points about shipping cost and time to get things shipped. One example that was used was robots that would act as forklifts and as tractors delivering items to the shipping station. The article also talks about how Amazon bought a company that makes robots that move things around warehouses. It also talks about all of the different robot making competitors and how Amazon has started an "Arms Race". Another thing mentioned was the shipping time and how things used to take weeks to get mail orders and now with Amazon things can take day's maybe even a few hours to get shipped. Another thing mentioned was the amount of money that Amazon's shipping cost which totals 16.2 billions dollars a year; and the article goes on to say that robots could go a long way in helping Amazon cutting down shipping cost. Even though there are all of these good effects on warehouses the article mentions the bad things are happening because of these warehouse robots; like job displacement. The article claims that the robots are not going to take jobs they would be filling labour shortages. One example that the article used was the idea if someone had a warehouse in a small town. Robots would be needed to fill labour jobs to make the warehouse run. Finally, the article mentions the effects that warehouse robots could have on the future of warehouse works, “there’s going to be a lot of people who’ll be displaced,” said Elliott. “It’s going to be a disruption.”

These new robots are going to have an effect on warehouse jobs in the future, and this change will be a small but ever increasing change as more and more companies start to use robots for manual jobs. There are many reasons to uses robots in warehouses and there are only a few reasons to not uses them. There are many hard decisions involved with using robots in warehouses. Is it right to give robots jobs that people need? What will these now displaced people do? What type of effects will this have on other labour jobs? Getting jobs done fast and more efficiently, is it worth it to take jobs that people need in order to support their families. It is only a matter of time before robots in warehouse start to become a reality (in some places it is) and take jobs that people could be doing but only time will show how much of an effect this will have on the working man.
