Earlier in the unit, we studied the quote, "We may have different religions, different languages, different colored skin, but we all belong to one human race." This ties to the idea of "community added to individualism" (Quindlen, 22) included in "A Quilt of a Country." Both of these ideas describe how our differences don't affect who we are as people, and our unity is based on how different we all are.

The video titled "Are We All Bigots" and the text "A Quilt of a Country" both express the idea of bigotry. In "Are We All Bigots," it is shown how team rivalry can affect people's views on each other. For example, when the two boys watched the videos of their rival teams failing, they immediately grew happier. This relates to the Quote, "What is the point of a nation in which one part always seems to be on the verge of fisticuffs with another, blacks and whites, gays and straights..." (Quindlen, 45). Both "Are We All Bigots" and "A Quilt of a Country" show that people are always pitting against each other for unimportant reasons, which ties to the whole theme of bigotry.

Quindlen's Claim/Evidence

Quindlen's claim in "A Quilt of a Country" is that America is not a united nation. In the second paragraph, she states, "Children learn in social studies class and in the news of the lynching of blacks, the denial of rights to women, the murders of gay men. It is difficult to know how to convince then that this amounts to 'crown thy good with brotherhood,' that amid all the failures is something spectacularly successful" (Quindlen, 14). This shows that America has a treacherous past of inequality and discrimination. This is a key piece of Quindlen's argument because it exemplifies how America has always been a nation of bigotry.
Another supporting quote from Quindlen's text would be "Other countries with such divisions have in fact divided into new nations with new names, but not this one, impossibly interwoven even in its hostilities" (Quindlen, 47). This quote explains that America is made of many different parts that have separated each other. Both of these pieces of evidence prove that America is not a nation of equality.

In "A Quilt of a Country," Quindlen develops the idea that America is a nation built on the fact that we are a self-dividing country. A current example of this would be the discrimination of Muslims, and pretty much anyone of a Middle Eastern descent. Ever since 9/11, Americans have been less accepting of Muslims. It's like we've divided them all out and labeled them 'terrorists.' Anna Quindlen states that, "...these disparate parts were held together by a common enemy..." (Quindlen, 50). In this situation, Americans have turned Muslims into their common enemy. Hate crimes have been committed, privacy has been invaded, and rights have been violated.
Source: https://www.aclu.org/feature/anti-muslim-discrimination

One discussion in the Socratic Seminar that I found was insightful was the discussion about how America is held together by a common enemy. People brought up 9/11, the Cold War, the Vietnam War, and other tragedies in America. This helped extend my knowledge and think more about Quilndlen's claim that America only unites because of common enemies when people shared their viewpoints with the class. At first, I was kind of questioning whether or not I agreed with this claim. But once the class discussed it, I felt that I gained more knowledge on how our country really is tied together by common enemies so I could form an opinion.

A song that connects with "A Quilt of a Country" is "War" by Bob Marley. In "A Quilt of a Country, Anna Quindlen mentions, "the notion that all men are created equal, though everyone knows that most men consider themselves better than someone" In "War" by Bob Marley, the song is held together by the notion that inequality still exists, and in Marley's point of view, it causes war. Marley states, "Until the philosophy
Which hold one race superior and another
Inferior
Is finally
And permanently
Discredited
And abandoned
Everywhere is war."
Both "War" and "A Quilt of a Country" express that racism is a problem in our world today. http://www.metrolyrics.com/war-bob-marley-bob-marley-ml-video-5ng.html

Read more: Bob Marley - War Lyrics | MetroLyrics

The text title " A Quilt of a Country " and the video titled " Are We All Bigots " both basically explain how we are the main example of showing bigotry. In " Are We All Bigots " it talks how we all persecute each other on our skin color, religion, and even our genders. It shows how even if we were all on rival teams, it can change the way we view our people's daily lives. We can only consider how we judge it, and not except their differences. In the text " A Quilt of a Country," Anna Quindlen expresses how ," When
photographs of the faces of all those who died in the World Trade Center destruction are assembled in one place, it will be possible to trace in the skin color, the shape of the eyes and the noses, the texture of the hair, a map of the world. " This explains even though many different people were in those buildings or on stand-by. We still tend to talk down on certain individuals, meanwhile there was every ethnicity in those areas. But, they still only nit-pick and how they fall apart piece by piece. So, both " A Quilt of a Country , " and " Are We All Bigots " consistently set against each other for indescribable points. But, never sees through on the main issues. The hate and mean bigotry that they are giving out.

A line I connect to this from the Article is "What is the point of a Splintered whole." because what is the point of having racism when the United States is suppose to be the land of the Free.

In the article it talks about how people have discriminations over each other. As said in line 30-32"in which Jewish boys would walk several blocks out of their way to avoid the Irish divide of Chester avenue.
They would take on pleasure from the mind of the discrimination towards them. Not just that but, Quindlen understands that with the diverse lines of discrimination is it hard to come to agreement (lines 68-71)

It relates to a quilt of a country because both the BLM movement and a quilt of a country focus of discrimination, racism, but being united and stronger together. It also shows how both are fighting both there wars figuratively speaking.

In the BLM it tries to unite the U.S.A by bringing equality to race. In a quilt of a country it also does that and especially in the 4th paragraph when she starts to state reasons on what's the point of being divided races. Anyone perceived as Muslim—whether actually Muslim, Sikh, South Asian, or Arab—suddenly became associated with the face of terror. Since September 11, 2001, the U.S. Department of Justice reports that more than 800 hate-related incidents targeting Muslim, Sikh, South Asian, and Arab communities have occurred across the country.

"Today the citizens of the United States have come together once more because of armed conflict and enemy attack. Terrorism has led to devastation- -and unity." I have never once heard of this band, nor their music but one part of the song really speaks to the message.

We live in a world that's turned so cold
Now that our integrity has been sold
We're living inside this broken world
This broken world
This broken world

This world is changing in to day out, while yes people are changing in many different ways. There will always be those people who want to do terrible things and don't care what those actions are. When Quindlen wrote, " These two are our defining ideals; they are also in constant conflict." It's constant conflict on accepting others for who they are, but when they are the same person as you. Why is it so hard to understand ?

With what she said was completely true, and the main event going on right now to support that is BLM. In the article , " What is Black Lives Matter and what are the aims," it talks about BLM and what it means to POC. " Among its main goals are stopping police brutality and fighting for courts to treat black people equally. Its demands for equality also include mental health, the LGBT community and voting rights." This ties to what Quindlen is saying because when an African American person is seen on the street, American doesn't seem to matter anymore. They would just be named to another " African " on the street.
