I think that "thing" is that Homer is very cautioned to his surroundings, and he's a great liar. I think that the reason why Kate, Frank and Homer don't like each other is because, Kate and Frank are trying to steal Mr. Willow's money, by pretending that they have the same tickets to the same place and steamship as them. I know so because it states this on page 91. Homer also states in the text on page 91, " They're after the money. I know it, Kate knows it, and  Frank knows it." I also feel like it is getting on Homers nerves that Kate is giving him so much attention and not giving him as much so that he will go away. It makes me feel like this by reading page 95-96.
