Music has always been my passion and I'd love to explore the deep and committed craftsmanship behind the songs we all know and love. Since around the age of 4, I've been singing along to songs that I'd hear on the radio, yet it wasn't until I was around 7 that I actually started to digest the lyrics and understand the messages and meaning of music. From that moment onwards, I became a hardcore lyrics person. I tend to listen to the words and the implications of songs before listening to the instrumentation and acoustic qualities of the songs.


    My personal project was motivated by my inspiration, being the already existing website; Genius. In this website, you can collaborate with people all over the world to create a full analysis on your favorite songs. I thought the idea of Genius was brilliant, though it needed a little more information like the back story of the songs and the qualities/elements in the lyrics. Hence, I decided to tackle that role and create my product; More Than Words.

Lyrics can mean something, after all, humans were gifted with thought and the ability to critically think about advocacy or just standing behind what you believe is right and what you support. Songs aren't always about going to parties the whole night and messing around with other people. Sometimes lyrics can tackle very real problems in our modern-day society. And this is precisely what I'd like to show the people that stumble upon More Than Words, that songs can‌ change lives and create impacts.

    Step 3: Analyze Literary Devices Imagery: Are there strong visual descriptions? Metaphors & Similes: What comparisons are being made? Symbolism: Do any words or phrases have deeper meanings? Repetition: Are any words or lines repeated for emphasis? Rhyme Scheme & Structure: How do the lyrics flow and contribute to the mood?


    Step 4: Examine the Song’s Context Who wrote and performed the song? When was it released, and what was happening in the world at the time? Is it autobiographical or inspired by real events? Does it belong to a specific genre or movement that influences its meaning?


    Step 5: Connect Lyrics to the Music How does the melody support the lyrics? (E.g., sad lyrics with slow, soft music) What is the song’s tempo, key, and chord progression? Does the instrumentation enhance the meaning? (e.g., electric guitar for intensity, piano for melancholy)


    Step 6: Consider the Audience’s Interpretation How might different listeners relate to the song? Does the song have multiple meanings? Has the song been interpreted differently by critics or fans?


    Step 7: Summarize Your Analysis What is your overall impression of the song? How effectively does it convey its message? Why do you think the song resonates with people?
