Mrs Sherry Turkle TED talk focuses on the word technology, she shared her studies and ideas about the advantages and disadvantages of technology. She also states the problems that we, human, are encountering, in this era, regarding the too much usage of technology in our lives.
As she talks, there are 3 main points or 3 statements of her ted talk that people will surely relate to. First is the statement, "Technology change who we are" for technology really change people. Yes we can't change the fact that rapid change of technology helps us to do things easier and it is more convenient. Furthermore, the impact of technology on our lives, these days can simply, not be ignored. The 21st century is already being called as the era of science and technology, and we have advanced so much in this field, in just 18 years. This seems unbelievable but yet it has happened. From the wrist watch one wears to the cars we drive, every single thing is digitized. This are just some of the reason why we say that technology plays a great role in our lives. But little did we know, technology cost us a change. It changes our behavior, actions, and on how we interact. People are now too much dependent on the virtual world. Our focus now is to impress others by doing things online but not really in real life. This changes us in the way that we now became ignorant on how to properly interact with those people around us. People are now using different social media platforms to convey their messages through emails, voice mails, text messages, and etc. but its content doesn’t have any feelings because in texting we tend to change our thoughts not not like in reality, as you encounter and have conversation with people what comes out in your mouth was the first thing that comes in your mind and that is what we call true sincerity and feelings. It was not filtered. Another is people always check their gadgets if their is a new update but they forget to check on people around them. Not like in the old times that people are really acquainted with each other.
Second, Connection to Isolation. People are lonely but afraid to interact with other people justifies what Mrs Turkle said on her ted talk that “Connection to Isolation”. People think that they are connected to each other because they have constant communication in virtual world but in contrary they are really not connected because they are just sending context without any emotion in it. In this case we tend to forget the difference between real life and virtual world. We may be connected virtually but in reality we are in isolation. Think this way, when you are holding your gadgets you feel happy, you feel contented because people can totally relate to what you are telling but did you ever think outside of it? Did you ever reflect on what will happen if you put your cellphone down? Do you have anyone, a real person, a real human, to talk to? No, because people are very focused on being connected virtually that they are becoming isolated on people around them. We are loosing the connections we the important people, our love ones, our family and our friends, that we should really have instead of those that we do not know. And also, when people think they are lonely they find attention in social media instead of getting attention from people around them and when the netizen rejects them they feel more lonely and they will decide to build a wall and isolate themselves.
And lastly, her final statements brings conclusions in this problem that technology is giving us. Mrs. Turkle says that we should start talking and listening to each other. People should start having deeper and meaningful conversation face-to-face in order to learn and grow from each other. Having conversation with someone makes happy and with that people forget the thought of their gadgets. This way we can bring back our old selves before gadgets occurred. We can live happily and free from the chain of technology.
