I sat in the hall until they were finished, and when they came out, I was given a special parrot coloring page because I was one of the only people in my class who knew how to read! The twist: my parents didn't know I could read until my teacher told them how wonderful I was doing!

I listened to many "adult" conversations about problems I didn't understand. Two of my teachers greatly influenced me however, and instilled a love for reading for information and knowledge as well as for fun. Mr. Meyer and Mrs. Laney advocated for all types of reading, but insisted that above all else, reading was one of the best ways to learn.

As I complete this project, I have realized that my "Literate Self" has abruptly transitioned from word to world over the course of the 22 years of my life. I hope that in realizing this, I can incorporate more word into the world and vice versa, using both simultaneously to better myself, my classroom, my students, and others around me. Knowledge comes in many forms through books, and through culture and it is important to recognize that using these two together will make us better, well-rounded educators.
