The repetition of "my son" is used because as the reader reads the poem one can understand that a large theme is that of time and how no matter how long we think we may have the grave truth is we all go at one point. The repetition of "my son" is to emphasize that even though life goes on, beyond a sweet moment with your child and you may pass and life gets in the way, it is still "[her] son."

There is meaning beyond the literal in the phrase "cries and hunger." As a small child their main focus is eating and when they don't receive that needed food they show they are upset through tears and crying. Later in life, as a teenager and further, different concerns arise that we begin to feel override those concerns we had as children. While in reality, making sure we are fed should truly be one of our main focus because without food we would die.
