Dragonwings Q and A Table 1
By: Zoe, Sophia, Alfonso, Amogh

Question 1. Describe Grandmother's idea of the Land of the Golden Mountain

Answer 1. Grandmothers description of the Land of the Golden Mountain is that she believes the sun warms up the mountain and then gold appears. She says greedy demons scoop the all the gold up into the buckets and keep it for themselves. Grandmother doesn't know how the mountain looks like or anything aboutit that she has seen herself but she just told moonshadow myths and legends that were told to her.

Question 2. Describe the town of the Tang People. What is its present name? How did Moon Shadow's father and the people of the Tang welcome him when he came? Who was Black Dog and what did he announce was going to happen?

Answer 2.
The town of the Tang People is in Chinatown, San Francisco, which is what it is still called today. The houses in it are much like the houses of the Tang People back in China. There are many hills, but no golden mountain, to Moon Shadow’s disappointment. Chinatown is about a mile from the dock. The town has many people selling small things like candies and vegetables. Moon Shadow was greeted by his family, which he had never even met before. He immediately felt a connection with his father, Windrider, who used to be just a man writing from a letter, but now he was a father. After meeting his family, they had a feast in their home and Moon Shadow received many gifts from his family members, such as a kite from his father. Black Dog was the son born of Uncle Bright Star’s second wife. He was a strange man, who despises his own father. He is involved in lots of shady activities, such as gambling. Black Dog’s bad character formed even more when he was gambling and lost all his money, and his ticket back home to see his family. Because of this loss, Black Dog chopped off his right hand--- the one that had held the dice, in anger because he had lost the chance to see his family once in five years. Black Dog didn't get introduced to you in the story just to creep the reader out, he had a purpose the first time you meet him. That purpose was to warn the Lee family. He warned them about the “demons” getting ready to come and beat up the Tang People. Black Dog was right, right after he warned them a brick smashed through their window.

Question 3. How did Windrider get his name? Who was the Dragon King? Describe the dragon's kingdom.

Answer 3. Moon Shadow explains that Tang men can and do have multiple names throughout a lifetime. Windrider shows Moon Shadow their room. It is filled with small machines that are foreign to Moon Shadow. Windrider excitedly shows Moon Shadow each of the strange machines, including earphones, a crystal set, and electric light in a lightbulb. Windrider decides to tell his son about his name. He goes into a sweeping narrative involving a Dragon King. His memory comes from the first night he spent in America. When he woke up, he was on a beach of jewels with a dragon about five hundred yards long on it. Windrider tells of how he knew that the dragon was an Imperial Dragon because of its five claws, and how the dragon was quite old and badly injured. Still in Windrider's memory, the Dragon King tells Windrider that he used to be a fine dragon, but was punished for immoral behavior by being transformed into a "softskin," or human (3.33). He was punished for trying to extinguish the sun with the force of his wings. Though he has no memory of it, as a dragon, Windrider was the "greatest physician of all the dragons.” The Dragon King tells Windrider that his remaining power lies in his kite-making abilities. He requests that Windrider heal him, saying that the wisdom of how to do so lies in his hands.
Windrider requests the Dragon King reduce himself in size so his body can be worked on. The Dragon King shrinks to about twelve feet. Windrider remembers how his hands knew how to heal the Dragon King. He does indeed fix him. Windrider wishes to return to his natural state as a dragon, but the Dragon King says he needs to wait until his life as a softskin is over. He will be given a series of tests as a human he will need to pass to become dragon again. The Dragon King has nearby soldiers affix wings onto Windrider so he can see how awesome the dragon kingdom is. Windrider uses his wings to fly. The Dragon King takes off in flight, strutting his flying skills. He and Windrider race through the sky to Windrider's home.
Windrider remembers the Dragon King's throne and how amazing it was, full of gems and gold. On the back of the throne was a black stone with the word for sharing on it; the Dragon King used this to speak to whomever he wanted. The Dragon King uses the throne device to contact each of his descendents for a banquet. He then lets Windrider contact someone of his choosing. Windrider picks his wife, and he suddenly hears Mother singing a lullaby to a gurgling Moon Shadow. Windrider decides not to speak to her, as it would only bring a more intense sense of pain and longing. The Dragon King loses a game of dominoes to Windrider and saves the winnings for his future return to the dragon world.
Windrider returns to the mortal world, and thus finishes telling his dream to Moon Shadow. Windrider admits he has no proof that this memory ever happened. Moon Shadow assures his father that he believes in the memory as reality.
Uncle Bright Star throws a wooden carving of a monkey onto Moon Shadow's bed as an embarrassed gift. Moon Shadow keeps its creator a secret from the Company, figuring Uncle would want it that way. The little sculpture is really something, Moon Shadow reflects, impressed by Uncle's rheumatic hands. Moon Shadow falls asleep with the Monkey beside him.

Question 4. Who were the "Old Ones"? How did Moon Shadow and Windrider meet the demon, Mr. Alger? What is it that fascinates Windrider so much? Why?

Answer 4. The old ones were dead family members of moon shadow and windrider. Moon shadow and windier where delivering laundry when they came across a demon (Mr. Alger). Father stopped to see if he could help and the demon needed help with his horelsses. Father then tried to help with it and succeeded. Mr Alger then gave him a card and told him to stop by whenever he wanted to be a handy man. It fascinated windrider because the man was so nice to him because he did a little thing to help the man that was so simple. He also thought that machines were true magic.

more_vert

On page 114 Tiger General said that Black Dog and Windrider never got along in the first place. Windrider ended up in the same place as Black Dog which caused a fight. One of B,ack Dogs helpers tried to kill Father but Moon Shadow (who secretly followed Father) tackled him while saving his dad. Father and fought and fought but Father and Moonshadow ended up defeating them with the finishing cut on the back.

3) Why is the chapter called "Windrider's Claws"?

This chapter is "Windrider's Claws" because Windrider shows the part of him that is still a dragon from his former life. The part of his inner dragon that escaped his control in this chapter was his claws. His "claws" were used when he found out that Black Dog had hurt Moon Shadow. In the middle of the night, Windrider punched Lefty, who had been guarding his bedroom door. He walked in the darkness, unaware that Moon Shadow was following him, to a building next to an alley. He had a hatchet with him, and intentionally started a fight with Black Dog. The aftermath of the fight was a cut on Black Dog's chest, a man dead, and a hit to Moon Shadow's head. This chapter was violent, and showed what powerful dragon was inside of Windrider.

Dragonwings Ch. 6 Q 1
1) Describe Moon Shadow and Windrider's new home.

Moon Shadow and Windrider's new home is on Polk Street, and the house itself is Miss Whitlaw's old barn that they had cleaned up and are renting from her. The house is not great, not many of the houses on Polk street are, because that street is where all of the poorer "demons" live. The house is on a dirt lot. The kitchen has a table with a red and white checkered table cloth, chairs, a water pump, and an icebox. The house also has a parlor, a hallway, and a collection of books. Moon Shadow is fascinated by the stain glass window, which he feels sorry for Miss Whitlaw when he realizes that the green creature on it is a dragon. He feels sorry because the dragons that the demons believe in are evil creatures, not good creatures. The house also has a piano on which Robin (Miss Whitlaw's niece) and Miss Whitlaw play songs.

2. To where did the people of the Tang move, and why?
Moon Shadow and Windrider were kicked out of Miss Whitman's tent and were forced to move to the main camp of the Tang people which is Van Ness Avenue that had a warehouse at the end of the street. The very next day the demon soldiers forced them to move to a parade ground at an army fort near the entrance to the Golden Gate, which is the entrance to the bay. On Thursday, they were moved to the golf course at the Presidio, another army base slightly to the east of the Golden Gate. In the book on page 242, Moon Shadow thinks of it as the "demons" not being able to make up their minds. They were moved around so much because the demon soldiers were kicking out all of the Tang People to a separate camp, because there was no more Chinatown after the fire. Even right after the disaster, the demons required that the Tang People were separated from everyone else.

3. What is the bad thing that balances the good thing (the Company's friendship with Miss Whitlaw)? Explain the recent event/outcome.

Moon Shadow believes that there are scales in Heaven, bad things that happen are balanced with good things that happen. An example of one of these balanced events is Miss Whitlaw's friendship with the Company, and the other event is the demons taking Moon Shadow and Windrider and moving them to the camp for just the Tang People. At first when Miss Whitlaw met everyone in the Company, they weren't sure about having their dinner with a demoness, but Uncle warmed up to her immediately after he had the brandy she had made. They found lots in common between them and became friends. Uncle even let Miss Whitlaw sit in his throne! In the book it is stated that sitting in his chair is an honor Uncle might not give to the emperor himself. But three days later, that was balanced with a bad event. Moon Shadow and Windrider were visiting the Whitlaws when demon soldiers kicked them out of their own friends' tent and moved them to a camp for just the people of the Tang. Because all of the houses were destroyed, there was no more town for the Tang People, so they had their own camp. After this, they were moved again, and again. Because of all this, Windrider and Moon Shadow have a plan to pretend to move to one of their town's rival cities, and after they get jealous, they might let them stay in the place they want.

4. Where does Windrider decide to move, and why? How does Moon Shadow feel?

Windrider decides to move to Oakland. He made this decision because he wants to pass his final test and become a worthy dragon. Windrider wants to be free, and the only way to be free according to him is to fly. He wants to move because he decides that it is important to think of himself, not just everyone around him. Windrider wants to build a flying machine and become an aeronaut. That way, he will fly and be free. His plan to earn money is to have shows to see him fly, and show everyone how free a man can be. At first, Moon Shadow feels abandoned that his father would move away without saying anything about where he would go, but then found out that his father was secretly hoping he would come along. After that, Moon Shadow felt proud to be Windrider's son.

1. How does Moon Shadow's new home compare with his last one?

Moon Shadow's new home is similar and different from the stable at Miss Whitlaw's house that they lived in. One similarity is that both of the places they lived in are not houses, one was a stable and the other is a barn. They were both originally built for farm purposes. Both of them had to be cleaned out well, because they used to be homes for animals. The reader can infer from the book that the landlord of the barn that Moon Shadow and Windrider are currently staying in is not as friendly as Miss Whitlaw. The reader can infer this because their new land lord didn't bother to even try to get rid of the smell of the barn, and he did not welcome them like Miss Whitlaw did. The description of the barn and the stable made it seem like the barn was not tended to at all, it also seemed like it was bigger than the description of the stable. Although, the stable seemed slightly more well kept.

4. What happens to Black Dog? Do you think he get what he deserves? Explain.

Black Dog was found in an alley with his throat slit and his wallet gone. His coffin was shipped to the company, and that was how they found out. Uncle was effected by this very much because he was so disappointed to see the person that his son was. I think Black Dog got what he deserved because he hurt, fought, robbed, and threatened to kill his family members. To me, his death seemed like a punishment. Like the author once said in the book, that Moon Shadow believed that bad things are balanced with good things. Maybe this event balanced the event of Black Dog hurting and robbing Moon Shadow and Windrider.

1. What do you learn about Lawrence Yep's reasons for writing Dragonwings?

I thought, after reading the afterword, that Yep's purpose of writing this was to open everyone's eyes to see what the Chinese had gone through during their journey, and how difficult their struggles were, yet few Americans had helped them. Yep wanted to show that Chinese-Americans are just like every other person in this world, yet especially at that time Americans placed them so low on their metaphorical ladder of importance. They must have thought of each group of people were on a lower or higher bar on the "ladder". In the book this metaphorical ladder was not mentioned, but to my belief that is what Americans thought at the time. They might have had stereotypes for people just because they don't look exactly like them or because they speak differently and come from a different part of the world. This opinion that Americans had at the time was extremely unfair, especially considering that the people they thought so little of held together their economy with businesses. If they had left, everything would have fallen apart and the Americans would have realized what they were doing all along.

Soon enough father lost control of Dragonwings but managed to get a hold of it once again. Then a minute or two later Dragonwings took control over after. The kite twisted and turned every which way. Father couldn't do anything at this point. One of its bolts snapped and then Dragonwings threw father on the ground. He lye there on his back as Moonshadow and Uncle ran over to check on him. Uncle said his right leg ways broken and maybe to of his ribs but that's all. So the flight of Dragonwings didn't turn out the way everyone wanted it to.
