Built in 1591 to house the novices interested in religious life, the convent was erected by two Franciscan friars, Friar Antonio dos Mártires and Friar Antonio das Chagas, commanded by the Superior of Order in Brazil and at the request of Vasco Fernandes Coutinho - the son. In the Colonial period, the building was home to about 16 students, and it housed 25 novices in the year 1765.

Burial of the Friar Pedro Palácios

It was customary at the time to bury the chief religious of the order within the convents. In 1609 the Convent Church was preparing to receive the mortal remains of Friar Pedro Palácios, who had founded the hermitage of Penha. Reports say that during the burial ceremony, some people who touched their remains were healed of their illnesses.

The tombstone transcribed by D. Pedro II

Reports tell that D. Pedro II, when visiting the Holy Spirit in the year 1860, transcribed the words of the tombstone of Friar Pedro Palacios, which read: "Vee Petri and Palatus Sanctuarri DN of Penha Fundatoris Reliquiae simul cum crucis arundinae sigillo quo prae manibus gestori consueverat hic sitae sunt. 1774, which reads as follows: "Here are deposited the remains of the Venerable Pedro Palacios, founder of the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Penha, as well as the staff with the sign of the cross that he used to bring. 1774 "
