In the poem, "Casey at the bat", by Ernest Lawrence Thayer, there are many words and phrases that influence the tone and mood. The mood in the poem is an abandonment of hope as we are expecting Casey to win the game for his team but he doesn't. The text states "Oh, somewhere in this favoured land the sun is shining bright, The band is playing somewhere, and somewhere hearts are light; And somewhere men are laughing, and somewhere children shout, But there is no joy in Mudville—mighty Casey has struck out." This text compares a happy and joyful place with the joyless town of Mudville. This shows how Mudville has lost their hope for Casey to win. This doesn't only affect Casey but also affects the mood of the poem. It helps to darken the mood from being excited as Casey has gotten to the plate, to immediate disappointment and hopelessness. Phrases and words do determine the mood and the mood is important so you could feel something for the characters, if its sympathy or if it's anger you still need to feel this emotion to understand the story.
