They thought only the whites were catching up during the depression, and the black families rarely reached $100 a year. 
The Great Depression actually began in the rural South with a severe crisis in agriculture. Approximately 150,000 African Americans left the state of Georgia in the decade of the 1920s to escape economic conditions.

In some cases, the price of a bushel of corn fell to just eight or ten cents. Some farm families began burning corn rather than coal in their stoves because corn was cheaper. Landform was big during the depression, as land prices and crops also fell. Many farmers lost their land and their farm because farms were worth less during the depression. The “Dust Bowl” is an event that lasted up to 8 years and happened during the 1930s. A very severe drought that dried up a lot of land and farming. Economic depression coupled with extended drought, unusually high temperatures, poor agricultural practices and the resulting wind erosion all contributed to making the Dust Bowl. People tried to protect themselves during this severe drought by hanging wet sheets in front of doorways and windows to filter the dirt.
