Slaves made up nearly 90% of Saint-Domingue's population, and in 1789 they couldn't help but hear about the revolution underway in France. All the talk of liberty, equality, and fraternity sounds pretty good to a person in bondage, and so the slaves rebelled. All of this led to a sudden explosion of Piedmont-Sardinian territory in the years 1859-1861 which ended with the proclamation of the Kingdom of Italy. The King returned to Portugal leaving his son Pedro to rule.  using the army George D Aviles had sent an ultimatum to Pedro telling him to go back to Portugal and swear to uphold the Constitution. He agreed but later changed his mind. He was convinced to travel Brazil in order to gain support.
