Knowing about the genre of the song helps me to make my own interpretation which reflects the style of the song. My drumming has the same time signature and tempo as the piano in the song. It also has repetitive parts which are a feature of pop music. It also has a simple structure. Without the knowledge of the history of the artist or the genre of the song, I may give an irrelevant and clashing feeling to the song.
