This book is a collection of essays and poetry that explores the intersectionality of race, gender, and sexuality, particularly within the context of the Chicana and feminist experiences. Ms. Moraga, a Chicana lesbian feminist writer, delves into her personal and political journey, addressing issues such as identity, love, activism, and the struggles faced by marginalized communities. Her book challenges traditional norms and offers a powerful exploration of the complexities of love and resistance during this period. Moraga's unique voice and perspective contribute to the ongoing discourse on intersectional feminism and social justice, making this book a seminal work in contemporary literature.

Loving in the War Years can roughly be divided into two parts. Although the entire text flows along the continuum of Moraga’s life and struggle as a Chicana lesbian, the first section of the book, is presented in a journal format. While the second segment “A Flor de Labios” seems to take on a format common to academia.

The reader is witnessing to Moraga’s growth and coming of age as “Loving in the War Years” is a journal proclaiming her Chicano/a lesbian identity.

The second part of Moraga’s the book, titled “A Flor de Labias”, contains her writings from 1995-1999. This segment marks a clear departure from the earlier journal-style writing as it takes on a more “aca- demic” format. Moraga moves away from the previous personal narration of Chicana lesbianism and her personal struggle with family and peers to discuss the political, economic and artistic debate in Chicana/o theory. Her language also transforms from the emotional poetry of her youth to the rhetoric of a professional academic.

To Anzaldúa, mestizaje is not merely a term; it is a transformative and deeply personal concept that encapsulates the rich and complex experience of being of mixed heritage, particularly the blending of Indigenous and European cultures in the Americas. (Talks about Mestizaje indentity)

Gonzales - it should come as no surprise that Gonales's search for her own identity begins with intimacy. Her subsequent personal progress will be influenced by the early discovery of her lesbian sexuality and the brave choice she made to come out about it.
