The Black Codes were aimed at limiting the economic and physical freedom of those who were formerly enslaved. The goal of the Black Codes was to continue oppressing the black minority by finding loopholes in laws protecting them, it was to keep black people to an inferior status.

Southerners began lynching black people to exercise their power over black people to show how a Southern white man could own a black persons body and soul. Lynching black people was a way to continue oppression towards black people going as they could not technically continue slavery. By Southerners beginning to lynch Black people, it demonstrated the way that oppression had a way of fitting into different containers, submitting to different laws and finding ways around them to continue.

Southern White men were hypocrites because they pretended to protect women but in reality they used it as an excuse to hurt Black men and keep control. They claimed they were lynching Black men to protect White women from rape, but Wells was able to prove that this wasn't the case. Many lynchings had nothing to do with rape at all. Sometimes, they happen just because a Black man was successful or because of a consensual relationship with a White woman. Wells showed that White men often hurt Black women and nobody cared. That showed their "chivalry" just meant protecting their own power.
