In the movie Deadpool, the main character Wane Wilson (a.k.a Deadpol) breaks the fourth wall of movies and occasionally talks to the audience. During these scenes, Deadpool tells us a quick backstory, his feelings/emotions, what he's thinking, etc. Not many movies do this, however, the viewer can understand the character better, similar to a book or a soliloquy. However, soliloquies are not direct speeches to the audience, but rather just a stream of consciousness/ thoughts to themselves. In Deadpool, the speeches were directed towards the audience.

In 8th grade, the language arts classes performed A Midsummer Night's Dream by Shakespeare. This was the first time many students, including myself, were introduced to what a soliloquy was. It became clear as to why play writers include them because it's more difficult to show emotion or thoughts rather than just explicitly say them to the viewers.

"A soliloquy is a speech performed by a single character, usually in a play. In a soliloquy the character speaks his thoughts out loud, to himself. This literary device allows the audience to know what the character is thinking, though the other characters are not present and therefore do not know this information. Shakespeare is famous for his soliloquies."
