We are introduced to two characters here, the Bishop Myriel and Valjean. I felt bad for Myriel when he was just trying to show kindness to a criminal turned away from everyone, and he just takes advantage of him and steals his silver. His compassion goes so far that even when Valjean is caught by the police, he lies so he does not go to jail and even gives up his only silver. I guess his kindness was necessary to make Valjean decide to become an honest man though. It was heartwarming to see him praying on his doorstep. So far, the Bishop has been the best character.

We are two years after Valjean's scene and are introduced to Fantine! Tholomyes and his friends are the worst. I hate that Fantine has to raise a child on her own as a struggling orphan herself. Its really heartbreaking that she had to leave her daughter to grow up with strangers. Especially since she thought Colette would be in good hands but they just abuse her and force her to work. It reminds me of a Cinderella story. The Thénardiers are legit scum and I think they'll prove to be even worse later on. I can't wait to see how Valjean is introduced into this storyline.

I'm assuming Madeleine is Valjean. That is crazy how he went from a criminal to a successful businessman, philanthropist, and mayor! The bishop really did a number on him. Javert seems annoying. The scribe really had no right to make Fantine lose her job. I can't believe she has to resort to prostitution now, but selling your teeth?! "Madeleine" saved her that's so nice, but Javert promptly ruined that moment. The scene when she spits in face and he doesn't care, and she faints because of his kindness is actually funny.

I really do not want Fantine to die, her character has been through so much and she still hasn't gotten a chance to properly raise her daughter. I'm glad that Valjean decided to turn himself in, although I hope it doesn't negatively impact him saving Colette, that girl needs out of that house. Truly saddened by Fantine's death, she deserved better. Javert continues to be a thorn in this plot. Valjean is really good at breaking out of jail apparently.

I was a little bit disinterested by the Napolean story, but they mention Thénardier at the end, so I'm sure that will be an important plot point later on. Valjean fakes his death, nice!! I hope he goes to save Cosette now. Cosette's situation truly makes me want to cry! That poor girl deserves the world in my opinion. The Thénardiers prove themselves to be terrible people once again, how do you treat your baby boy just as poorly as Cosette?! Valjean is here to save the day! Good riddance to the Thénardiers! Javert really thought he catch them, I don't understand this man's obsession with Valjean. Let it go!

I hope that this religious prison doesn't hinder with Cosette's life further, she should be able to see the world. I like how characters make a comeback, like Fauchevelent, you should never overlook a side character. Really happy that Cosette and Valjean are living peacefully in the convent now.

Wow, its really insane that the Thénardiers threw Gavroche on the streets. I do not care much for the political talk in this book, but Marius seems like an interesting character so far. He is a little bit prideful in my opinion though. I see that he's Cosette's love interest, so I am excited to see where that goes. Valjean should let them be together, I understand where his protectiveness comes from, but Cosette deserves to be happy. Javert making a wanted appearance once again--not. I wish Cosette and Marius would've been able to get connected before Valjean whisked her away, he's getting a bit too controlling.

Marius really is so clueless to Eponine's love for him. Really happy that Cosette and Marius professed their love for eachother. However, Valjean definitely ruined the moment, he's became way too overprotective. What is the grandfather even saying? It really shows how different the times were back then. Usually breakups call for ice cream not joining a radical uprising but I guess we all deal with heartbreak in different ways! Eponine got a redemption arc with her death. Valjean is on a mission to tear this couple apart but it seems like he's realizing where he is wrong.

I cannot stop thinking about how old Valjean is and yet is still managing to accomplish all this. I'll be honest, I really wanted him to kill Javert with his behavior this whole book, but his character shined through. He is saving Marius through the sewers, that is dedication. Javert still doesn't give up after he let him live!! I was not expecting him to drown in the river though. Marius and Cosette are finally together! Marius definitely did not have the right to keep Valjean away from his daughter like that, especially since she is all he has. In my opinion, Valjean's criminal past isn't even that bad, but I suppose that's from a reader's perspective. I am crying at this ending! I absolutely love Valjean's character and he had a bittersweet ending. This book did not fail to tug at my heart strings.

The Nightingale is overwhelmed with sorrow for someone else's love. Honestly, at first I thought that is kind of dumb, but alot of us can relate when we see a couple we really like breakup or ship people on a show. I cannot believe that this bird is going to sacrifice its life for a rose, it is definitely poetic.

This story really has a sinister view of love but it is eye-opening. One life can sacrifice itself just to make someone else happy. Love is not always sunshine and rainbows, it brings alot of sorrow. People will go to extremes for love but don't realize how much its hurting them. Often, the other side is not even that good, like how the boy got rejected.

I decided to create a Les Misérables inspired Monopoly Game. The properties are various settings in the story going in chronological order. There are a few story spots which briefly explain a part of the plot and then tells you to collect or give up money. The flags are basically areas where you land on and have to pick up a flag card. I incorporated the Nightingale and the Rose in those card which connect the plot of the story with various actions in the game. I really loved painting the board and incorporating things like francs as the money, and the bread as the go to jail spot.
