I know this because in the text it says “ Why a blind man can deliver my milk with Joseph pulling the wagon.” This is a form of foreshadowing but it also relates to the theme because no one knew that Pierre was blind except Joseph, Pierre always had a positive attitude and seemed so cheerful when coming to work. You would’ve never assumed he was blind. Another theme for this story can also be that friendship matters. Joseph’s death really did damage Pierre in horrible ways. They’ve been friends for so long I could only imagine how hard that must’ve been to lose each other. Pierre had such great trust in Joseph to let a horse drive you around town and you don’t even know where you’re going. I think we all aspire to have a friendship like Joseph and Pierre.

Pierre trusted his horse, Joseph, even as a blind man. He trusted his horse to be careful, gentle, and knowledgeable when he sometimes failed to. An example for this is in my first Signpost, showing that they’re relationship is strong and tight.
So, in conclusion, the theme could be that if you’re close enough, you could die together. Pierre promised to only stop when Joseph did, and that is how it turned out. They live together, and die together, and while they’re alive they live in harmony and trust.

How  might this change things?
This will change things in the way that people will start putting pieces together. What I mean by this is that nobody knew he was blind. So, people will start noticing why he did certain things and why he always wore a hat that covered his eyes. The reasons why he wanted to keep Joseph for as long as possible, is because before he was blind he trained Joseph where to go. And because he got used to doing these things, It was easier for Pierre to adjust.
Why did the character do that?
I think that Pierre didn’t tell anyone for multiple reasons. One of these reasons being that he didn’t want to bother anyone with his problems if he was able to deal. Also I think that he wanted to spend as long as possible with Joseph, his best friend. But, unfortunately, Pierre was lost. But it makes me wonder - did he realize he was in danger and just let himself die because his horse was gone too? Maybe Joseph was the only thing he had to live for.
