Sydney Lane

Source Citation

Levine, Bruce. "Mental Illness Is Overdiagnosed." Mental Illness, edited by Noah Berlatsky, Greenhaven Press, 2016. Originally published as "Why the Rise of Mental Illness? Pathologizing Normal, Adverse Drug Effects, and Peculiar Rebellion," Madinamerica.com, 31 July 2013.

The main idea of this article expresses the increase in mental illness diagnoses over the past few years. People will mistake sadness, or mood swings over time as mental illnesses. This generation is getting harder and people struggle through things at times, but that does not mean since those people are going through a lot that they have a mental disorder. Martin Seligman, the president of American Psychological Association stated “We discovered two astonishing things about the rate of depression across the century.”

This article is reliable because of all the facts and figures within it. The quality of the author’s expression shows the tone, and the author’s tone is calm but persuasive. The information given is very new and the facts are up to date. This article was assessed February 27, in 2018, but was written in 2016. The types of evidence provided are facts and quotes from important figures such as Marcia Angell.

This article was useful in providing support for research in my project. I am interested in learning about mental illness as well as studying the reasons why mental illness diagnosis has increased over the years. This article helped me find new information about this topic and I could support my argument because it does provide great information.
