Synopsis of Comprehensible Input

Comprehensible Input is part of the Monitor Model by Stephen Krashen. Krashen is an American linguist and educator who developed this linguistic theory. “According to the hypothesis, we acquire language when we understand messages or obtain comprehensible input. That is, we acquire language when we understand the things we hear or read.” (Wright, p.54) To put it simply, educators take the students current level of understanding/proficiency and instruct them just above that level to make the information more comprehensible to help them understand the messages. What this means is that educators make a conscious effort through a variety of means to make the lesson more understandable. While this is used for multilingual learners, it is a theory that can be used with all students. It is more than merely using visuals. The educator would use visuals, tone of voice, repetition, non-verbal cues, affirmations, and offer opportunities for input while modeling.

Reference:

Wright, W.E.
