The girls' names are Maisie and Callie. The went to play by the bridge near their house, and Callie was playing , and went onto the bridge. Maisie did not want to go onto the bridge, for she was afraid. Mama came and told them that she had to go Doctor someone, because she was sort of like the doctor in the area that they lived in. They were left alone, and it started to pour down rain. They went inside, and Callie said that Mama always made a fire when it rains like this. Callie got the axe and tried to chop some wood, but she dropped it and cut herself. Maisie tried to remember how Mama would treat this. She boiled yarrow and made a tea, and then Mama came back home early. She asked Maisie why she hadn't called her, and the story had ended.

Another connection is poke berries seem to be tiny berries and they are describing the children as poke berries because they are high up in the mountain and they look small from down below.I remember going to Disney World for a Christmas present and high up I was from down below the people looked like poke berries.
