The way he writes about the devil waiting for you and that hell is gasping for them makes the audience feel scared. It opens up imagery in readers' minds that there is a devil in the distance of hell just waiting for them to fall into their trap. It goes on to say that the flames gather and flash about them, which means that the flames are following and thinking of them.
