Admiral Dunfee is a former Navy man who saves unwinds until they are 18. His son was one of the first Unwinds. Ever since, he has felt guilty for his actions and tries to save Unwinds so they do not turn out like his son. If Dunfee finds an Unwind with one of his sons body parts, he send the Unwind to his house. At his house he celebrates as if it were a family reunion, since it is a piece of his son. Dunfee ends up having heart surgery, so he returns home to all the Unwinds that have a part of his son.

Two themes that are shown throughout this novel are sacrifice and betrayal. Unwind shows the theme of sacrifice because the protagonists have to choose between freedom or their own lives. Connor risks his own freedom to save Lev in the following quote: "And so, battling his own instinct for self-preservation, Connor races toward the kid in white who was so happily going to his own unwinding." Another theme is betrayal because the parents betray their children by giving away their child's organs to someone else.

The Bill of Life is a set of constitutional amendments that did not allow for abortion to be legal. However, they did allow "unwinding". This bill makes it legal to "unwind" a child between the ages 13 and 18. This decision made by the Bill of Life caused war between the pro-choice and pro-life groups. Parents unwound their child to give their organs to others.

At the age of 16, Connor's parents decided he would be unwound. Connor is a trouble maker, but only because he gets bored. He is not as "bad" as he seems to be because when deciding the run away he kept acting cowardly. The two things that motivated him to run away were that his parents signed him up to be unwound and his girlfriend agree to go with him. Even though his girlfriend backed out last minute, he still went through with escaping.

Risa is an orphan and almost all of her problems are out of her control. Her first dilema was that she was put up to be unwound because the orphanage was congested. Then, her bus ends up crashing. This ends up turning into a positive because then Risa is given the chance to escape.
These incidents cause Connor and Risa's lives to intertwine. Risa was firm when Connor went to grab for her, saying, "touch me again and your arm gets ripped off

Lev was born to be unwound because he is a tithe. He is a tithe because his parents had ten children and knew that they would unwound one for the church. Lev wants to be unwound because he believes that it is an honor, as seen in the following: "This is what I was born for. It's what I have lived my life for. I am chosen. I am blessed. And I am happy." Risa and Connor stop him from being unwound and this causes Lev to want retribution. Lev goes to Pastor Dan who tells him to choose life instead of choosing to be unwound. This is when Lev realizes that Connor and Risa were only trying to help him. Towards the end of the novel, Lev becomes a "clapper" because he has never feared death. A "clapper" is a suicide bomber and plans on blowing up the Harvest Camp. Lev's partners blew themselves up, causing Connor and Risa to become injured. It was at that moment when Lev realised he wanted to live so he could save his friends.
