"And I was frightened and started to call out for Ralph and then I saw something moving among the trees, something big and horrid." (Golding 85) This shows how the littleuns' are afraid of the beast and can't even grasp how dangerous the situation is. "They lay there listening, at first with doubt but then with terror to the description the twins breathed at them between bouts of extreme silence. Soon the darkness was full of claws, full of the awful unknown and menace." (Golding 99) This quote shows how Sam and Eric found the beast and described it as something they have ever seen before.

In Lord of the Flies Jack is described as being fearful to what the island has to offer and aggressive towards the other characters. This quote illustrates how agressive Jack can become,"I cut the pig's throat,"said Jack proudly (Golding 69). As the novel starts to progress, the other characters notice a change in Jack. Jack starts to lose his personality by becoming more agressive and he also starts to gain more fearlessness towards the beast. The following quote represents how Jack loses his fear towards the beast,"The thing is-fear can't hurt you any more than a dream. There aren't any beasts to be afraid of on this island" (Golding 82). Jack is used as a symbol for fearlessness because unlike the other characters, he has the personality traits to overcome fear.

Symbol - The Beast

The beast represents the inherent evil of man and how man will do evil once they realize their are no repercussions on their actions. "Kill the pig. Cut her throat. Bash her in." (Golding 75) Jack sings this chant when hunting pigs and murdering them. This shows that Jack finds joy in destruction of others and becomes more and more like the beast itself. Another quote states, "But I know there isn't no fear, either unless we get frightened of people." (Golding 84) shows the foreshadowing of the boys' starting to fear what the others are capable of. The boys' suspicions started with the beast but have morphed into fear of each other. The beast changes forms over time on the island and every time the boys' are afraid of it's changes. It morphs from a fear of the unknown to a parachutist, who was believed to be a terrible beast. This quote says, "Simon mumbled confusedly: 'I don't believe in the beast.' Ralph answered him politely, as if agreeing about the weather. 'No I suppose not.'"(Golding 105) This conversation can leave to reader to believe the beast is their own imagination, portraying what they believe and leading them to act in ways their true self thinks they should. The beast is significant because it has created controversy in their group starting to tear them apart little by little and will affect their trust of each other in the long run.

Character - Piggy

Piggy is a character who is nonathletic and not very capable of physical activity. This quote shows how Piggy was seen by his own group "Piggy was an outsider, not only by accent, but by fat, and ass-mar, and specs, and a certain disinclination for manual labor." (Golding 65) Piggy has been a stagnant character throughout the novel, staying exactly the same in his personality. "What are we? Humans? Or animals? Or savages? What's grownups going to think? Going off - hunting pigs - letting fires out- and now!" (Golding 91) Piggy is ranting on and on about what his morals are and how he thinks other people might react. He is nervous about how people will perceive him, so he only speaks his mind when the risk of getting off the island is at stake. Although, the group may get tired of Piggy and his ranting, he shows an unbiased opinion on different situations. Piggy represents the only stability the group has by always trying to reason what he thinks is right.
