My media product appeals both to females and males as it features a female artist on the front of the magazine and contains photos of a male band on the contents page. I had 2 female models and 3 male models in order to have the same amount of coverage of either gender within my magazine. I wanted it to represent both of genders as many real life examples of rock music magazines appeal to both a male and female audience and convey the message that music taste shouldn’t be specific to one gender.

Furthermore, I think the magazine represents and appeals more to teenagers than older audiences due to the bright vibrant colours and informal and chatty writing style of the article. The colours make the magazine seem “fun” and lively rather than elegant and relaxed in the same way a classical music magazine would.

I also ensured that the artists featured throughout the magazine were all teenagers in order to appeal more to my target audience. I don’t think there are many stereotypes when coming to my target audience.

I made my models wear quite dark colours for shoots apart from one or two items of clothing. This was so it was easier to make it match with my colour scheme. This is mostly the same with hairstyles, and I wanted my models to all have mixed hair colours and types in order to come across to as many people as possible. In some ways this would challenge the stereotype that would be that all 'punk' artists have brightly coloured hair. However, I still wanted to stick to the conventions of the genre so I made sure at least one of my artists had brightly coloured hair.

To continue, I framed my models with the camera in various different ways in order to represent young people. The shot I chose for my front cover shows my model from an even angle, I didn't want her to look particularly intimidating as it was the front cover and it may put people off of picking it up. It's the same for a high angle, I didn't feel it would have been the best option. I personally didn't think that it was suitable for the genre as rock tends to be a serious genre and quite 'dark' conmpared to the likes of a lively EDM track.

I made sure I used props such as musical instruments. For instance, within one of my photo shoots I had my models sit at piano and a drumset. It keeops the photos suitable to the genre of magazine and it allowed to play with the framing of the shots. I didn't have to worry about stereotypes as generally musical instruments are not associated with gender.

My media coursework mainly sticks to the conventions of a typical rock music magazine, however in some cases I do believe it challenges those conventions.

Firstly, my media product is designed in the same way. Likewise to real products, my magazine uses a similar vibrant colour scheme in order to be eye catching and grab the audiences attention. My colour scheme didn't conform to any gender stereotypes such as pink and purple/green and blue being associated with males/females. In some ways, sticking to a neutral colour scheme would challenge the conventions of music magazines in general, not just rock music ones, as commonly magazines stick to gender based colour schemes (e.g. TOtP). As well as this, my magazine sticks to the same style layout as a real product; there's a lot going on all over the page and generally it is quite crammed, giving it that 'busy' look with next to no white space. Real life media magazines do this often in order to make it look like their magazines are full of content and to even out the design without it looking unevenly distributed or bland.

To continue, my media product uses some of the same design features such as a large masthead, "pugs" and different fonts in order to make my magazine look more professional and realistic. It doesn't really challenge anything, it simply copies it, but without copying it the magazine wouldn't look realistic at all and would look bland, or unlike a magazine altogether.
