If Atlanta fell, Union leadership hoped that it would bring the already bloody war to a swift end. The confederates made 2 rings of defense with slaves, fortifying their territory with canons as well. They had 18,000 soldiers that in the early morning would flank the Union army and attack the weak rear, making a major change in the flow of the battle. Cut off and destroy the Georgia Railroad and enter Atlanta from the east. Sherman forced his troops to cover his left flank. General McPherson organized his troops in a L shape with the vertical arm running north-south and the horizontal arm running east-west. He also placed a cannon on bald hill and fortified his line with trenches. The union also fortified their position on top of a hill so the confederates had to fight a literal uphill battle.
