The Disruptive Design Method is a problem solving tool that seeks to solve problems in a different way than they were introduced. It is a way to look deeper into problems and tackle them at their roots. DD is made of three parts: mining, landscaping, and building.

I chose this image because DD is iterative and circular, not linear. It seeks to solve complex problems, therefore necessarily has a complex approach. With this approach, "we evolve issues into opportunities."(Change is Iterative, p. 16)

Mining is the process of digging into a problem, understanding the many layers of what makes it a problem, and “loving” the problem. (Becoming a Problem Lover, p 19) Parts of mining include defining problem arena boundaries, asking a relevant research question, and researching ethically. It requires suspension of the need of solve, and the active recognition of biases.

I chose this picture because mining is all about exploring a problem. You have to really search and investigate everything about the problem and the best way to research it. If I had to define mining in one word, I would choose “exploration.”
