"Sonny's Blues" Ending Analysis

In The Ending, the author analyzes Sonny's performance and what it means for him. He describes it as his "redemption" in relation to the "cup of trembling" from the Book of Isaiah 51:22. Despite this, he also discusses how Sonny is still the same person at heart, and the demons that caused his addiction may return at any moment. I agree with their latter analysis because I believe that every experience sticks with a person. For example, although a person has grown from an experience, there is always the possibility for relapse or a slip. Sonny has the very last say in his actions and whether or not he chooses to stay strong and free from 🤬, or to relapse and fall back into them. This analysis discusses resolution and symbolism. It describes how in life, there is never one resolution, just a collection of experiences that are learned from. It discusses symbolism through the "cup of trembling", which refers to one's redemption and forgiveness. - Jaylyn Saechao Period 6

In the selection, the author compared Cain and Abel to the narrator and Sonny. For example it says, "Like Cain, the narrator turns his back on his brother and fails, at first, to respond to Sonny when he is prison." I agree with their analysis because Cain is suppose to take care of Abel just like how the narrator is suppose to take care of Sonny. In the analysis, it says "In that narrative, Cain, after murdering Abel, asks whether he is supposed to be his brother's keeper....The idea of brotherly love extends beyond the relationship between the narrator and Sonny into the community as a whole." This is discussing the theme and resolution because it talks about brotherhood which is the theme and it explains the resolution. -Carol and Jasmine

add

In the selection, the author explains how Harlem is a danger for Sonny, but it is also his home. I agree with their analysis because Harlem is what got Sonny into 🤬, but there is also places there that also helps him. For example, "And Sonny went all the way back, he really began with the spare, flat statement of the opening phrase of the song. then he began to make it his." Although Harlem is a danger for Sonny, the nigh club is his home. At the night club, he is able to drown himself with his music . Sonny does not have to worry about anything outside of the nightclub for those few moments. The author is discussing symbolism in this article.

In the selection, the author analyzes the characters´ physical and emotional freedom. I agree with their analysis because it provides an accurate description of what the characters´ face, connecting to their feelings based on it. For example, the analysis talks about Sonnyś imprisonment both physically and mentally due to d r u g s. The analysis discusses the element of symbolism because it talks about how Sonnyś imprisonment and drug addiction symbolizes him being trapped.

In the selection, the author explains how houses in Harlem were cold and brutal and also filled with 🤬. The analysis of the story is discussing the setting of the story. I agree with the analysis because it describes Harlem in the same way as " Sonny's blues". For example in the analysis, Harlem is described by including "..drug- infested buildings." This meant that it was a home to 🤬 and it was hard to get away from it. To add to this, in "Sonny's blues" it says, "...but the reason I wanted to leave Harlem so bad was to get away from 🤬 ." This agrees with the idea of the selection by showing the negative side of Harlem.

The element discussed in “The Prevalence of Rage and Fury” is point of view or motif. In the section, the author states the rage and anger of the people which helped contribute to creating jazz and have life to religious revivals. I agree with the analysis because the story does indeed talk about the people being angry. For example, “‘ all that hatred and misery and love. It’s a wonder it doesn’t blow the avenue apart’”(1773). This shows that the people of Harlem are filled with so much anger and fury that it was surprising to Sonny that the Avenue didn’t explode. Another example, “by the fire and fury of the battle which was occurring to him up there”(1715). This shows that Sonny is fighting internally and with the piano. Also, “They are aware of the limited opportunities available to them, and that knowledge breeds an internal, destructive rage that threatens to destroy their lives”(2). This shows that the students of the narrator are angry because of the limited amount of opportunities. This means that many people are filled with anger and fury because of their situation. - Elaine, Nicole, Barkhas, Jasmine, Shalma, and Sammy

In this selection the author discusses the elements of the resolution and the symbolism within the story. In the selection the author analyzes the end of Sonny's blues by explaining their underlying ideas and symbolism in the story. I agree with their analysis because the author provides context and evidence for how the story can be represented. For instance, the author notes, " Some even liken Sonny to the Prodigal Son in the Bible, who leaves him home and squanders his life but finally returns and redeems himself after seeing the error of his ways." The author had shown us that Sonny could possibly be a sign of symbolism, as it connects with the Prodigal Son in the bible.

The story is discussing motif. In the selection, the author analyzes the relationship between Sonny and the narrator and compares it to Cain and Abel. I disagree with their analysis because the relationship between Sonny and the narrator was not as bad as Cain and Abel. For example "Cain, after murdering Abel." Another example is "the narrator has taken Sonny back into his home." A third example is how the narrator "finally takes on the role of his brothers keeper."

In this selection, the author discusses that the characters are both physically and emotionally trapped. For example, the author states that, "Sonny is physically imprisoned in jail as well as by his addiction to 🤬." In this quote, the author explains that physically, Sonny is in jail and emotionally, Sonny is addicted to 🤬. Another example is that, "The narrator is confined to Harlem and, more specifically, to the housing projects that he clearly detests." In this quote, it states that physically, the narrator is free (not in jail), but emotionally, he is trapped inside Harlem and its housing projects. The last example is that, "He is in the end, temporarily freed by Sonny, whose music offers him a rare glimpse into himself." In this quote, it shows that the narrator is "free" with Sonny's help. This selection agrees with their analysis that the characters are both physically and emotionally trapped because the selection describes the imprisonment of the characters in Sonny's Blues.

In the selection, the author states that rage is represented in the streets of Harlem. I agree with their analysis because the people living on the street would fight a bunch in the story. For example, Sonny's father got run over by a bus. Also, Sonny and his brother would always fight when they saw each other. Likewise, when Sonny's brother was talking to Sonny's friend he said, "I ain't smart, If I was smart, I'd have reached for a pistol a long time ago." -Safwan, Herbert, Tiffany T., Yolanda, Mina, Leo, Tiffany C.
