Pass on Pompeo? by

Students will give a brief paragraph response to the article, considering
1. What role does Pence play in this process?
2. How does the process work?
3. Is this indicative of party polarization or Pompeo's merit?
4. Presidents are typically given much credit in selecting their cabinet. Why might this be resisted here?
5. Why is the committee process important for filling cabinet roles?

Pence can cast a vote in the Senate. This may be needed as there is opposition from both parties. Although there is resistance in the Republican party, Democrats are under more scrutiny for theirs. Some say Pompeo is highly qualified but Democrats are opposing him because they can. They may be resisting simply because he is being nominated by President Trump, who is from the opposing party, but they may also find some fault with Pompeo that marks him unfavorable. This is the case for some Republicans, who are from the same party as Trump and would usually support his nominations.

A majority vote is needed in the Senate to approve this nomination. If there is no majority, Pence would be there to break the tie. The resistance by many Democrats shows the party polarization within Congress. Many Democrats are resisting this nomination because they feel if they approve it, in a way, they are approving of Trump.

The GOP currently has a narrow lead and Pence could provide an additional vote to aid in Pompeo’s nomination in the case of a tie. Pompeo’s nomination is being resisted due to primarily democratic concerns about his ability to amplify Trump’s own thoughts (like minded). However, some democrats may be resisting due to not wanting to support Trump in any way - even though Pompeo may be more than qualified for the position.

Because Pence is there president of the senate, he can cast a tie-breaking vote in a confirmation hearing if needed, which might be necessary because of the amount of opposition against Pompeo. This opposition may be partially due party polarization, but in the past Secretaries of State have not faced much opposition regardless of their party. This may be because of the unfavorable view most Democrats and many republicans have toward the president, or it could be to to Pompeo’s reputation as belligerent and anti-diplomacy.
