Metaphors of The Outsiders by Ebony Dohnal

Your task is to pick a character from the Outsider and provide a brief explanation about them. What you then need to is find a picture that represented them (this could be an object) and explain how and why this image/object represents your character. It can not be the character you did in the previous task. Please put your name and character in the subject!

I have selected Ponyboy as my character. I believe that a book represents Ponyboy perfectly. This is because literature within the text is a major component that essentially saves the protagonist. It is through the power of text that saves Ponyboy through the progression of the plot. Beyond this, Ponyboy is also a book as his cover is essentially the stereotype he has been placed into but as the main plot progresses we begin to understand that his character is multifaceted and contains many layers.

I have selected Cherry Valance as my character. A believe that lipstick defines Cherry very well. Between the Socs, she is a tuff, cheer captain and succumbs to the stereotypes of the Socs. The lipstick that she wears and also represents her is linked to how it hides her gentle nature, and the lipstick shows that she is a rich, stereotypical Soc. But really, behind the lipstick, she dislikes the violence. For example, she tries to prevent her boyfriend, Bob, from becoming drunk and starting a fight in an early chapter of the book. Cherry doesn't fit the stereotype, and her many layers reveal throughout the progression of the book as we realise how Cherry is not like a Soc or a Greaser; she is simply a person who hates violence.

This is because ice cubes can be solid, which is when Johnny fights back against the Socs and saves the kids from the fire and sacrifices his own life. When the ice cube melts it represents when Johnny is at his lowest point and he slowly wants to give up he is losing hope for everything and is really upset about his parents as well. If you drop the ice cube and it breaks it represents when Johnny has a big breakdown and it is worse than the ice cube melting because when everything falls onto him and he just wants to die.

-Kylie

He is the pack leader, the one that takes them to battle and guides his pack to supremacy. He attacks at every opportunity he gets and proves that he is alpha by inflicting fear on his enemies. The socs are scared to go against him because they know how dangerous he is and what he could do to them. he had a high criminal record which is like the "bones of the prey he hunted" which he gladly boasts about. He is an influential dictator with great power and is very much feared among his own people as well so he keeps his pack obedient.

- Adnoi

This is because he is put under the stereotype of being tuff and picking fights as a greaser. But Ponyboy is the complete opposite of the stereotype. Ponyboy is soft-spoken and sensitive. He feels everything very deeply and expresses himself through words and poetry. He loves his friends and his brothers with everything he has, and he would do anything for them. I think a glass coke bottle could describe him perfectly because the glass in the bottle is hard from the outside but the drink is sweet on the inside. This represents ponyboy's personality.
Tanishka.

I have selected Johnny Cade as my character. I believe that a book really suits in describing Johnny's character and story line. The cover of the book merely gives an overall picture and one emotion, it doesn't give a defined and detailed picture, it doesn't go in depth. The more you get to know someone, the more you know their life, their emotions and feeling towards things. Just like when you read a book, just looking at the cover won't give you much information, you must start to read it, get to know it and go deep to uncover the unknown information. Johnny is like a book, on the outside, he may seem like what everyone thinks he is, calm, quiet and mysterious, but after you read the book, you realize he becomes extremely tough, brave and dangerous, different than what you see on the outside. Just like a book.

Ponyboy is comparable to Hair grease. Hair grease is a petroleum-based hair styler that seals in moisture for lasting protection. Just like ponyboy, It’s semi-solid at room temperature, but melts easily when massaged into hair. Ponyboy had a hard life, semi solid, but as he learns and understands that people do care about him, life becomes soft and moldable. Hair grease isn't one ingredient, it's filled with petroleum, paraffin liquid, paraffin waxes, mineral oil. Just like hair grease, ponyboy can’t just be one ingredient, he needs to depend on other chemicals, he needs to depend on the gang. Ponyboy can seal moisture, he can seal away his innocence, preventing frizz; preventing trouble, fights, and hardships that may come. Ponyboy is grounded, unlike the gang, he can hold his ground and dissolve within the community. He’s the grease that holds the gang together

She over looks the stereotypes and decides to look into who they are and for what they are worth. As a typical cowboy would do in the movies, they would see what their 'victim' or 'client' is worth. She has a very snappy attitude, she would always appear unhurt or untouchable, she wouldn't let others push her around or let others push her friends around. Almost like a rouge, she wouldn't stand for unfavorable behavior.

This represents Randy because first looking at him, he looks scary, powerful, fierce like a storm but once you go past that, past the storm you can see the better, brighter, sunny side of him. You can only see the sunny side if Randy either allows you or you move past the storm yourself. Randy had sympathy on the sunny side. The storm represents Randy's outside or first impression. Since Randy is a Soc, he has more power, has a massive group of friends to be with and looks menacing to people. But once you approach or he approaches you, the storm can move away, giving the nice, sunny side of Randy. He can be very nice, calm and regretful once you see his sunny side and it represents Stereotypes because all Socs seems all powerful, rich but once their storms move along or you go past the storm, they have another side. Like two sides of the same coin.
-Ethan

Sodapop keep buying more cigarettes showing that his cigarettes aren't burning out showing his 'tuff' stereotype.

Pony Boy is like a pencil because on the outside he has body that is wrapped around him like the stereotypical self but the lead is the true propose of himself and is sometimes shown. Pony boy is Stereotyped to be someone who likes fighting and is a gangster but he is not when he is with Cherry valance and thinks very differently. He changes his stereotypical possession between different people like a pencil sharpening to smaller sizes. As the novel progresses it seems like Ponyboy also controls the way his world works by creates his own descriptions of how he thinks about the characters like a pencil creating writings. He also dependent on people to find a view of him.

Darry

I have selected Darry as my character. I believe that Darry represents a wolf. Wolves are protective and caring, playful, athletic, and above all, devoted to family. They educate their young, take care of their injured and live in family groups. Darry is the leader, and is devoted to the gang (his family). Even though Darry could have put his younger brothers in a home, he dedicated his life to raising them, giving up his freedom. Darry helped Ponyboy with his homework, and looked after him when he was sick. He is also protective of his gang and will stop at nothing to protect them.

Johnny

The character I've chosen is Johnny. The reason that I decided to use a turtle is because Johnny looks like a tough person but in reality, he is kind of soft on the inside. A turtle symbolizes Johnny because of its hard outer shell which protects it from its main body. As Johnny is a greaser, he is meant to be tough and him looking tough protects Johnny from being judged from other greasers. Therefore he can be described as a turtle.

Dallas Winston

I have selected Dallas Winston as an Ice cube, an ice cube describes him well as throughout the book he is described as cold, feeling less character with a solid yet fragile personality. He never showed any sign of weakness until Johnny Boy's death when he let out all of his bottled emotions in the worst form possible and wished to die with Johnny. Despite having gone through so much there was a point where it was too much for Dally and he went into a meltdown. This is similar to an Ice cube, an ice cube won't melt until its surroundings reach a certain temperature, which is when it begins to melt rapidly the worse the temperature gets. An ice cube can also be dropped and shattered quickly just as he was dead before he hit the ground. Dally was able to hold on to life until Jhonny died despite being such a strong leader and having gone through so much throughout his life. All of His friends knew that he would die like this eventually, the temperature had already risen too high, and he was going to die.
- Angelica
