As an aspiring administrator, I want to learn how to strategically position teacher leaders so they can positively influence colleagues’ beliefs and instructional practices, which directly aligns with my dissertation focus.

My goal is to determine what makes a good leader than adult professionals can trust. I currently have a minor leadership role (team lead) and have had to step into a larger one (interim department head). I'm currently mentoring two new people and have no returning folks on my team, so I'm helping support brand new teachers (thus trying to be a mentor and not judgmental) as well as learning to take on more official leadership roles (department head/instructional coordinator's dean). I want to be both approachable and warm but also candid and make a difficult job more manageable for the people I work with. I hope to learn how to balance those aspects of leadership this semester.

My goal for EDLE 618 is to become not only a leader for my school but also a true helper to my teachers. I want to be able to show teachers how to be effective rather than simply telling them that they need to change. Too often, teachers are told they must improve without being given the guidance or modeling they need to do so successfully. I believe meaningful leadership comes from working alongside teachers, providing support, modeling best practices, and helping them grow in ways that directly benefit students.

My hopes and goals for this course are to gain insights and cultivate my skills to be an effective and growth-minded leader. I want to be able to assess where staff and professionals are and help them move to where they need and want to be. I also want to be able to help others to reflect on their practices by utilizing data and research as a guide. I hope to learn more about how to have those tough and uncomfortable conversations that we all have to engage in sometimes. My goals for EDLE 618 is to ensure that as an administrator I know how to be supportive and useful to teachers in a collaborative way. I don't envision myself being the type of leader that "commands", but if I am to actually lead, I need to be able to connect and guide others in a meaningful way. I'm most excited for the professional development assignment. The best professional developments I have attended are those given by other teachers and I hope that I can learn not only to give PD effectively, but understand what truly makes them useful versus prescribed. My vision is that I will finish this course feeling more confident in my abilities to bring people together around a common purpose and to ensure that it is done authentically and effectively.
