Perhaps it is more of the question of motivation. The long term affects of that may include; obesity, worse depression, restlessness, motivationless behavior, and isolation.

Peer Support Intervention - Perinatal Depression

Peer support intervention has shown effectiveness in treating or preventing perinatal depression. Perinatal depression is a major issue that effects women world wide, it is defined as "the occurrence of major and minor depressive episodes that occur during pregnancy or in the first 12 months after delivery". Peer support intervention is a method that provides care for the mother from a social network member who has the necessary knowledge of specific behaviors that occur during post partum. This method is promising as it allows the mother to have a reliable network of people who are there for her, which prevents the common depressive feeling of isolation. From this study it was apparent that peer support intervention was well receptive by pregnancy and postpartum women. It may introduce another cost-effective type of human resource when it comes to addressing mental health care. However, it should be noted that this method is not guaranteed to work for every individual considering that there are many different levels of depression and no person is the same.

In the study by JAMA Psychiatry, the focus was on victims of back pain. Back pain is shown to cause depression so researchers decided to give the participants of the study a double blind test. 149 of the adults with back pain received the treatment and the other 146 did not. The participants receiving the treatment showed a reduction of the risk of depression by 52%. The web based self help resources have been shown to be able to prevent depression by giving the subjects affirmative words and reasoning with the subjects. These web sites provided users with at home activities to do to prevent depression such as yoga, social interaction, exercise, and self care. Thus giving them an extra sense of security in themselves and keeping away the causes of depression. The preventative measure being online gives the advantage of easy accessibility. However, people who may need more motivation may tend to skip this beneficial resource if they are alone. In the event that the subject follows and goes through the web self help resources thoroughly, improvements in well being and mental health are sure to come while also preventing depression.

Electroconvulsive therapy is a form of treatment for depression. The treatment works by stimulating the brain with small amounts of electricity that ultimately produces a small monitored seizure, due to this the patient must be under anesthesia. The shocks causes changes in the brain chemistry and regional connectivity that reduce symptoms of mania, depression, and catatonia. Electroconvulsive therapy usually takes 4-6 treatments for the patient to see improvement.

Our focus condition was very interesting in many ways. For example, I found it very sad with the amount of side effects it has because it can really ruin one's health and well-being. It's not just feeling sad it is something deeper than that. It's very unfortunate that many people suffer from this but it shouldn't be taken as something different.

The symptoms include

Persistent sad, anxious, or “empty” mood.

Feelings of hopelessness or pessimism.

Feelings of irritability, frustration, or restlessness.

Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, or helplessness.

Loss of interest or pleasure in hobbies and activities.

For the physiology of it, there are many possible causes of depression, including faulty mood regulation by the brain, genetic vulnerability, and stressful life events.

Women are more likely to have depression than men. An estimated 3.8% of the population experience depression including 5% of adults (4% among men and 6% among women), and 5.7% of adults older than 60 years. Approximately 280 million people in the world have depression. This is because of female hormone fluctuation. Medications and psychotherapy are effective for most people with depression. A primary care doctor or psychiatrist can prescribe medications to relieve symptoms and this really has helped many people with depression from all over the world.

I believe that the challenges people face with depression are not only depression itself but also the healthcare system. The reason why is that many insurance don't cover the cost of going to therapies. Not only that but many people don't have insurance and just going for one visit can be extremely expensive. People also don't have enough time in the day to go to therapy due to work, school, and other daily activities. Many people also refuse to go to therapy because they think it's a waste of time and money but those who gave it a shot say they almost always feel relieved after each session.
