This quote stood out to me due to my personal and professional experiences that I have seen through Education. As Annie Kidder points out, parent advocacy is not equally distributed among all parents in our society and part of this is due to the multiculturalism in our communities. It is much easier for English-speaking parents to advocate for their child than an ESL parent or a parent who doesn’t know any English at all.

I have personally experienced this issue as a visual minority with my mother, who is an immigrant with ESL. As a child my mother could not advocate for me as she didn’t know the language and was new to the country. I was struggling a great deal in school with language and math. It was only in grade 3 that the school noticed me. Academically I was two grade levels behind and it was than that the school got involve. If my mother had the language skills to communicate with teachers and the school I could have been helped sooner. My mother wanted to be involved with my education but it was difficult for her.

I have seen this scenario in my professional experience as well with a student who is identified as having autism. Her mother is an immigrant with ESL and she found it difficult to communicate with her teachers on a daily bases and find out what’s been going on in the classroom and what can she do at home to help her daughter improve skills and knowledge. As her voice was not being heard, the teachers could not advocate for the student and get her the right support and needs to further her education.

It is important as educators that we familiarize ourselves with cultural awareness of our students and families as it will impact the way we teach, learn and advocate for all our students. Parents and families depend on the ethical standards of teaching that we are providing for their child to help them succeed in education. It is important that parents are engaged in their child’s education and that all voices get heard.
