Politics Affecting Stereotypes in Fahrenheit 451

During the novel Fahrenheit 451, the author Ray Bradbury presents the ideas of political influence affecting the stereotypes of people living with each society. At the beginning, Montag is a fireman whose job is to burn books and he does not hesitate because that is all he has ever known to do. However, as the story goes on, he comes to the realization that maybe there is something that is being hidden from him. Once Montag has been exposed to other ideas within the rest of the world, he wonders to himself, “Had he ever seen a fireman that didn’t have black hair, black brows, a fiery face, and a blue steel shaved but unshaved look” (Bradbury 30) which shows that people have to look a certain way in order to do a specific job. This helps to create negative stereotypes because each person is only allowed to do the job that they look the part of. This idea also brought up when it came to electing the president, because each time there was an election each candidate had to have a specific name and look to them in order to be considered as the president. By using his stream-of-consciousness, it is revealed that everyone within society is used to these stereotypes and does not question them because they are not allowed to. The way that every fireman looks, creates a symbol for the way that everyone is restricted because of things that they cannot control. The government, assigns people jobs and things to do to insure that nobody can go against the rules and beliefs that have been followed for many years. As the story progresses, Montag keeps a book and hides it but then decides that he wants to share it with the people that he knows. Another character states that “My wife says books aren’t real” (Bradbury 80), which makes Montag feel awkward because he now has knowledge that very few people have since the people in charge are trying to hide everything from them. In this novel, each person is controlled by the government and their knowledge is restricted based on regulations put in place. This part of the novel, creates the feeling of hesitation and dramatic irony because of all of the knowledge there is today and how much knowledge is being restricted from everyone during this time. Books help to symbolize knowledge and the burning of all the books, shows that the knowledge each person could possibly have is being taken away without them even having a chance of using that knowledge to benefit their life. Through the use of political influences, many stereotypes are created that affect the way people think and act.

Stereotype Research

The government often creates stereotypes by telling society that they need to look a certain way and do a certain thing in order to fit in with the people around them or else they are wrong. Stereotypes often create tension and problems between the relationships of people because of the way that the government presents information to society. In one article, research shows that “Low or negative expectations cause poor performance.” (Little) which is also shown throughout the novel because no one is expected to do anything important so they don’t work hard to gain anything in life. Because of this, people also think of other people who think differently than this in a different way than they treat anyone else. For example, many people are very hesitant to talk to someone because of the way that they look or the way that they act. During Fahrenheit 451, the use of stereotpyes create many problems that are similar to what people are experiencing still today. There are many scenarios where people assume things about another person that affect their relationship and their viewpoints in an extremely negative way. Another big issue with stereotypes is the fact that people instead of addressing the problem continue following stereotypes while claiming that they are a problem. In an article addressing the topic, experts say, “The way that the child or young person thinks about his or her capabilities and talents is itself a key element is determining the level of performance that he or she will achieve” (Little). This shows that people who are influential, like the government, play a massive role in the lives of young children who are still developing. During the novel, this point is shown by the way that people are assigned jobs that they have to keep and don’t get to pick for themselves. In an article addressing the problems and importance of politics, many sources say, “They [politics] are meant to guarantee that society is fair to everyone.” (Politics). Even though everyone always thinks they are going to create an equal playing field for everyone, there never is one because the government plays a big role in assisting the differences between different poele to change how they are viewed. “Today, it appears to be a generally accepted fact that influence and politics are fundamental to all social phenomena, including work organizations, and the role of social influence processes in the organizational sciences has evolved in terms of the precision of our understanding over time.” (Social). This shows how the government is important to all of society and dictates everything that citizens are allowed to do. There are many researchers who care concerned about the way that psychological forces create negativity regarding society (The Journal). In short, the government often uses different tactics to aid in the use of stereotypes, which is also involved in media usage of the government.

Politics Affecting Media in Fahrenheit 451

At many times throughout the novel Fahrenheit 451, the media presented by the government shapes how society views different events that are happening. During the beginning of the story, it is presented that firefighters are responsible for burning books and starting fires. This piece of information is not what is expected for the reader when they see that someone is a fireman because they are supposed to help people and put out fires not create new ones. For example, the quote “And for the first time I realized that a man was behind each one of the books. A man had to think them up. A man had to take a long time to put them down on paper” (Bradbury 49), shows that the government is trying extremely hard to hide knowledge from society. Because of this, when they find something different they think about everything in their life a much differently than they ever had before. At many time throughout the novel, people are fearful or hesitant to do certain activities because of the extreme rule of the government and the way they present themselves through media. “They would have killed me, thought Montag, swaying, the air still torn and stirring about him in dust, touched his bruised his cheek. For no reason at all in the world they would have killed me” (Bradbury 122) shows that Montag is so fearful for doing such a simple thing like reading a book. One of the key events was when the library was burned. Because of this event, knowledge is being taken away from every person who lives within this society. Many other events similar to this create a specific tone for all of the characters and the reader who feel a tense setting. Most of the characters, believe everything that is shown to them through the media, but Mildred shows Montag that there is more to life than the very restricted amount of knowledge that there is being taken away from them. Throughout the novel, the media is not showcased as something that people notice but all of the actions and direct characterizations prove that the media presented many different viewpoints for the rest of society. Since there aren’t as many typical news sources, there are many moments where it can be overlooked but they are very important to the overall theme of the novel.

One of the biggest issues in today’s society, is the way that politics change the way that people live their lives. Many times today, people are persuaded by the media around them to make all of their decisions and decide what they do and don’t want to do. For example, there are many moments in Fahrenheit 451, when the media shows many things that assist in the creation of problems. One source says, “Most culture war issues have produced political stalemates, but also plenty of paranoia, radicalization, and a cycle of escalating mutual overreaction.” (Mastro). Media is used for communication and development but there are many issues with it regarding the way that people decide to share information. Leadership has many different parts but leaders are usually not focused on important information but instead on how they can be better than everyone else (Political Leadership). Most of the time, media is used to spread problems and rumors which are mostly false. One of the biggest factors in these spreading ideas is the fact that “Once any question becomes understood as a matter of fundamental rights, it becomes immune to the normal political process, with little room to move on either side.” (Mastro). Many people often hear an idea and then are either fully against it or support so much that anyone who believes something different than they do is a target of rage regarding that subject. By using media, people often have their beliefs and credibility taken away from them by the government. There are many times where political leaders use their power in order to corrupt the rest of osciety in order to gain something for themsleves (Political Corruption). Politics are a driving force in this because often times, politics are an extremely sensitive issue which it shouldn’t be. However, by listening to political leaders people learn that people with different viewpoints should be hated instead of embraced for thinking differently than they do. Another article says, “The combination sets up the scenario of failed expectations.” (Managing). This quotes shows that many times, people see things through media that are extremely negative and tear people down instead of encouraging equality and embracement of every person that you see. The media shown by the government, also allows there to only be information seen that makes the government seem like they are good where in many cases articles use euphemisms to try to change people's views of something that they believe to be wrong. By doing this, people are shown that they need to act and be a certain way in order to be successful in life which is extremely negative. Political debates add to the issue by showing that there have to be two sides such as Democrats and Republicans which is seen by people of all ages and especially for young children teaches them to be on one side and only agree with those on the same side. This also plays into stereotypes and how people are judged harshly based on the little bit of knowledge that you know about them when they are seen. During Fahrenheit 451, there are similar situations to this because the world is split between those who are intelligent and those who aren't as intelligent. To conclude, the media shown by the government creates and assists in unresolved conflicts and issues surrounding the everyday lives of every member of society.
