Circuses are full of unique people, acts, and entertainment. Therefore, circuses themselves, by definition, refuse to adapt to society at a basic level. When P.T. Barnum first debuts his circus, everyone views him as crazy or strange to associate himself with the "freaks" of society. Although the pressure of society was constantly weighing on his shoulders, Barnum and the circus members found solace in each other. Speaking of circus members, Barnum's circus is comprised of people who refuse to conform to society belief of what is normal. Not to mention the absolute anthem that is, "This is Me." This song oozes non-conformity! It basically describes how society is constantly belittling and rejecting these people, but they won't let society's comments affect their spirit. The circus members, like the bearded lady, have learned to embrace what makes them different. This seemingly innocent Disney film delivers such a powerful message that it important for everyone to hear!

When comparing "The Greatest Showman" and Ralph Waldo Emerson's "Self-Reliance", it is easy to see the underlying message of non-conformity. Just like Emerson states in the poem, P.T. Barnum believes you can find the beauty in being different. "Get Out" follows Chris Washington when meeting his girlfriend's parents, Missy and Dean, for the first time at the Armitage's familial home in New York. Throughout his entire stay, Chris grows suspicious of Missy and Dean. With the addition of the Armitage's having two black servants to wait on the family, Chris becomes apprehensive over the whole situation. Things change when he tries to ask the two servants about certain events he has witnessed around the house. The servants, Georgina and Walter, appear distant and always give vague, yet unsettling answers. Chris knew something was seriously wrong with this family. He notices at the Armitage family reunion that this family has a strange interest in black people. At this same reunion, Chris takes a picture of another black guest, who seemingly snaps into his true consciousness, and yells at Chris to, "Get out! Get out!" After this interaction, Chris knows he needs to leave the Armitage house, as something is seriously wrong here. The movie continues on, but Chris knew to follow his gut instinct. He knew something was up with the way the Armitages treated black people from the beginning. He trusted his intuition, which saved his life!

Although this movie may not be the most relatable example, "Get Out" provides a great insight to trusting yourself, which is one of the greatest principles mentioned in Ralph Waldo Emerson's "Self-Reliance". After the events of "Return of the Jedi", Luke decided to open his own Jedi Academy to train the next generation of Jedi. One of these students was Ben Solo, Luke's nephew and Darth Vader's grandson. After sensing Ben having nightmares of turning to the Dark Side, Luke has a moment of weakness and sees defeating Ben now as the only solution to avoid another Empire. Ben awakens from his nightmare and is startled by his uncle's actions. Ben retaliates by burning down Luke's Jedi Academy, killing almost everyone, and becomes Kylo Ren, leader of the First Order. Luke blames himself for the destruction of the new Jedi Order and the rise of a new Empire, and goes into isolation. He moves to an island on a semi-deserted planet in the Outer Reaches of the galaxy, almost as a punishment. No one is able to find Luke for decades, not even Leia, his sister. He survives off the fish he catches, and the milk of local wildlife. 

The events of "The Last Jedi" show Luke living in solitude, in a state of content. In Thoreau's "Walden", the narrator choses to live meaningfully. Luke sees this way of life as his only meaning at this point. After being stranded alone on a deserted island in the middle of nowhere, Chuck Noland is forced to learn how to survive in nature. While stranded for four years on this island, Chuck befriends a volleyball, which was essentially gifted to him by nature's grace. Although his sanity is somewhat sacrificed, Chuck successfully learns how to coexist with nature. Chuck realizes soon after adapting to nature that his previous was full of unnecessary stress, and he got in touch with his true self while stranded. Nature appears to be on Chuck's side because it washes several salvageable objects onto shore. As a result, Chuck can use these objects to escape the island once and for all.

Like stated in Emerson's "Nature", Noland forms a relationship with nature. He uses the resources it gives him to sustain himself. As the events of "WandaVision" unfold, we see Wanda being the independent queen she is. After Vision's death, or should I say deaths, in "Infinity War", Wanda takes it upon herself to bring him back. Her powers allow her to not only recreate her husband, but also create The Hex where she can make life whatever she wants. She decides to live the perfect suburban life with two kids and a dog. Although she runs into some trouble, Wanda eventually embraces her fate as the Scarlet Witch. Wanda is done running away from her grief, and decides to destroy the Hex, which has unintentionally captured people to play characters in Wanda's sitcom life. When she destroys the Hex, her kids and Vision vanish. At the end of the day, the only person Wanda can rely on is herself and her sheer power to make life whatever she wants.

Wanda finally becomes who she's meant to be in the "WandaVision" series finale. This idea lines up with Ralph Waldo Emerson's poem "Self-Reliance" where he states that we must take and accept ourselves.
