When referring to people from a family chain who are rulers, like Kings, we normally use Roman numerals. Instead of writing the 3rd after names, we put III the Roman numeral for 3! We still use the Latin alphabet, although we have 3 more letters than they did. We still use Latin root words like manus, the Latin word for hand, in the word manipulate and manual. In their engineering and architecture, they used thoughts from Greek and other civilizations. The Romans improved these designs in ways that we still imitate today! Romans learned how to use arches and domes and vaults to build big structures. A vault is a supporting arch for a ceiling or roof. A dome is a half -circle shaped vault that rests on a circle wall. The Pantheon is famous for its massive dome. The Romans made a new stadium design that was a big open-air structure. The Romans made concrete tunnels into the stadium to make reaching your seat easier, which is still done today in modern stadiums. The Romans’ grand architecture has inspired loads of great architects throughout all the years. You can see Roman influence with government buildings, modern churches, and banks. They build the greatest roads, bridges, and aqueducts. Some of the parts of their aqueducts are still used today in Europe, Southwest Asia, and North Africa. A polpular Greek school of thought that was insanely popular in Rome was Stoicism. Many highly classed Romans adopted the stoicism philosophy and made it theirs. Stocks believed that a godly intelligence ruled of all of nature, and that a person’s soul was a spark of that intelligence. Living in a way that agreed with nature was called “living rightly.” The stoics believed that the only true good thing was good character, and this meant that they endured pain without any complaint or expression. We still call people who behave like this “stoics.” Roman law covered contracts, marriage, and inheritances between people. Roman law also covered many others parts of life. Modern legal codes are partly based on Roman laws in France and Italy, as well as others. Roman believed that a universal law of justice existed and came from nature. This law meant every person had rights. Our own Declaration of Independence echoes these ideas! All Roman citizens were protected by and and subject to Roman law. Citizenship is an idea that has come a long way and we still use it.
