Firstly, there are a lot of roads, tunnels and highways for transport to go around. About 10.6 million passengers use public transport and roughly 6 hundred thousand people are using private cars in Hong Kong. About 489 gallons of gas are used for 1 car per year. That can create a serious amount of smoke and other types of gas.

Another reason is fuel oils and natural gas to heat homes, by-products of manufacturing and power generation. When fuel oils are burned, the vapours given off when gasoline evaporates and the substances produced when gasoline is burned (carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, particulate matter, and unburned hydrocarbons). Moreover, natural gas emits nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds. These problems can contribute to air pollution. In 2021, the world produced around 8 billion tonnes of coal, 4 billion tonnes of oil, and over 4 trillion cubic meters of natural gas. Most of the coal is used to generate electricity for our homes and offices and has a key role in steel production.

Finally, fumes from chemical products. There are a lot of products made from chemicals, for example, charcoal. The process of making charcoal includes strongly heating wood or other materials in minimal oxygen to remove all water and volatile constituents. During this process, a lot of fume is produced. Humans breathing the fume is very dangerous; At low concentrations can cause dizziness, nausea, headaches and stomach pains, leading to unconsciousness and paralysis.
